personally i didnt think that many auto cars were turbo charged but found out that it is more common than i thought,

what do you think about it? should i turbo charge for more power and performance?

thanks

First concern, G E A R B O X.

So in short, unless ur have an awesome gearbox setup which is built to withstand big power,

no.

Automatic gearbox does have the advantage of keeping the turbo spooled between shifts...

so do blow off valves, or part throttle shifting(turbo stays spooled because you're not shutting the throttle body when the motor shifts... something you could do with a manual... really doesn't have anything to do with the tranny).

No reason you couldn't turbo your automatic motor, just understand that you're going to have to keep power really low. The greddy d16z6 kit would probably work fine on it, but I wouldn't go any more powerful than that.

A linky to a some info on how to strengthen your auto, this might allow you to have possible a bigger turbo kit than saxman suggested but I'm pretty sure you'll be at the limits by then

i wouldnt mind a auto tubod Civic, alot of people back in the states do it, they havnt had much complaints, but yeh if you want bigger power id say either a auto quickshift with the new box etc... or then again Manual conversion anyways yeh my 2 cents....

also you know the pricings for this? (parts and labour)

thanks heaps

I think a stock Gbox will be able to withstand the added on 6/7psi of boost. Its not going to crumble straight away and maybe not ever if you keep good care of it - regular fluid changes and sensible driving ie: no dumping from Neutral into Drive at 5000rpm!

lol a quickshift with its own gearbox is used in most v8s and big powered turbod cars? running 8,7,6 sec passes , and ther not cheap your looking at about 2 grand with the box and labour, then ur turbo alone about 1 and abit, u might as well just do the simple bitz as dreadangel posted the link to you, change parts in your gearbox if you want to run more power..

see earlier post re: greddy kit

be sure to set some money aside for proper fuel management and an intercooler on top of the kit though

Not only that, you'll have to get your car professionally tuned up as well.

You can't just buy a kit and whack it on. Need a new ECU to tune the car with as well. Or a piggyback. To be honest, get a manual car, or buy a pre-turboed auto car. For example, Audi A4 B4 1.8T. (probably a bit outta price range, but yeah u get the drift)

But to give you some hope, in the states, they turbo charge/supercharge my Accords even though our auto gearboxes have been known to be problematic both from consumer and Honda Motor corp. But what they do is get them rebuilt by a 3rd party rebuilder that uses stronger parts etc etc for a measly sum of $3500 USD! BAM! Some guy ran a very very quick quarter mile, in the 12s if i'm correct, from his supercharged 4dr V6 accord with the rebuilt stronger gearbox.

But to be honest, I'd advise not to spend more money than what your car is worth.

Yeah gearbox is definately a major concern. I'm doubting the stock gearbox's ability to take any serious amount of boost, stock gearboxes are only constructed to take what can be thrown at them with a stock engine setup. A small amount of boost shouldnt hurt it TOO much, but then itd almost be pointless to turbocharge your car in the first place.

If you're looking to turbo a car decently then you'll be lookin at thousands of $$$ anyway.

Talk to an Auto Tranny Specialist, tell them what your estimating to be putting out and they'll see what to do with your gearbox. I'd suspect you'll need more than just clutch plates and heavy duty bands with a turbo kit...
