Hey,

How the hell did you get the pin out of the shift rod or whatever its called!!

I was hitting the shit out of it with a punch and hammer.

I dont think it would be possible to drill it, these pins are made from strong steel...

Any ideas?

If your talking about the shift link onto the gearbox end,I think it was punched out from below.

has to be punched out... it's a bit of a pain in the ass

the bolt that holds the spare tire in happens to be the perfect size to punch it out, however... so grab that, and use it and a mallet to punch out the retaining pin

better to spend a few bucks and buy a 7 or 8 min punch and punch it out from underneath

why spend the money when you have something perfectly capable of doing the exact same thing already in the car? You're not going to damage it and the screw for the spare tire is shaped just like a punch you're going to go buy.

i got a punch set.
i got one stuck in there after trying to punch it out (8mm is the proper size to do it).

I had a bright idea to put a smaller one up there and smash it real hard as by doing so it gave me more clearance to hit it with the hammer, and with it stuck i could hit it harder without holding the punch. I thought it would push it through but its not and now this punch is stuck :(
Stupid idea.. i only have like 30cm of space to hammer at it from the ground to the end of the punch..

Seeing as this punch is stuck pretty firmly, i think im just gonna have to hit it real hard which cant be done, or remove the engine with this rod still connected and work on removing it when its not underneath the car.

What a stupid thing to do!! lol.. i was just getting so frustrated with it at the time and didnt care and just wanted to get it out however i possibly could.

Still stuck in there :(

Old screwdrivers seem to do the trick for me... hammer one end, apply WD40 beforehand to help it budge.

i applied some WD-40. Im pretty sure the main reason i cant get it is because i cant swing the hammer enough, that and because its in there tight.

Try using an L-Junction, something that bends at a 90degree angle, and give it a hit from a lower angle. You will need about 10cm for this to get a slight swing - just keep whacking!!! :)

hit it harder, but dont over do it,

jack up the car higher if you have to.

remember this thing is going into the gearbox, and you are putting pressure on the shift leaver on the wrong angle.

its best to use a punch that wont go into the center of the pin, rather the outer surface.

keep tryting :) you will get it.

You think its possible to pull the shift rod out with the engine John?
I cant really jack the car higher safely lol.

It would be so much easier to remove it outside the car.

are you going to reuse the shift linkage ???

their is another ghetto way

i did this last time when i coudnt get the shifter out
took out the engine and the shifter in 1 piece from the car
lowered the engine and lifted the whole car with the engine hoist
dangerous but possible.
but with my current conversion it took it out easily
just make sure you get maximum possible height

if all else fails, you can remove the tranny with the shift linkage, slide that out from under, then pull the motor out the top.

might consider this option...
ill have a real good go at it for a while and if all else fails i think ill do this.
I wont need the engine or tranny again...
only a couple of little parts off the engine.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I just need an engine hoist now.. too broke to purchase one atm :thumbdwn:

You have no idea how happy i was to see this pop out :D

Took me a good half hour to remove the punch i got stuck in there.. was hammering it through the hole from the top, on the side of the punch.. had multigrips on it and tryed hitting it downwards with a hammer. It finally came out, and amazingly undamaged apart from where i had the grips. I wont do that again.

I used a 8mm punch and hammered at the pin for about half an hour before i got it out, my arm was so dead lol.

I ended up tilting the hammer and hit it as hard as i possibly could on the side. This gave me a little more room to work with. It slowly but surely came through. I was giving it a hammering and it was only moving a slight bit at a time.
