Just thought i'd jump on here and share a few words in regards to Apexi's Active Tail Silencer.

I don't see many people using them, but after installing it on my EK4 i give it 2 huge

Basically the centre of the silencer is spring loaded and as pressure builds up it will open allowing more sound / gas to pass. On my car it will open pretty much the same time as VTEC so not only do i get the induction roar the exhaust also opens up to complete the noise. Down low you would think the car was stock. There's also no noticable power loss.

Here's the blurb from Apexi:

http://www.apexi-usa.com/graphics/products/2171.jpg

The ATS was developed as a high performance evolution to the standard tail pipe silencers available in the market today. While many people enjoy the power gains of a racing exhaust on the track, often times these systems require a silencer to be installed in the tip for use on the street. While sound output can be dramatically lowered using a non-adjustable silencer, unfortunately response and power tend to suffer due to increased exhaust gas restriction. The ATS (Active Tail Silencer) uses the same active valve technology as the PS Revolution exhaust system. The spring loaded valve is engaged and disengaged based upon exhaust gas pressure. This allows for effective sound suppression for the street, without the power loss under high load. Dyno tests have proven power levels to be nearly identical to an exhaust using no silencer at all.

Here's a comparison between no silencer, normal silencer and the ATS.

Edit: Now with video. So it has only been a couple years since my original post, but better late than never i say :)

i believe its like a flap type system.. without enough pressure to push the flap open the flap stays closed giving less noise in the exhaust system down low so u dont get that droaning noise.. and up top when ur hooning the flap is fully open for the loud kick ass noise that you want.

That one looks different to the one that came with the Apexi N1.

The sound of the exhaust with the silencer is unbearable. It sounds as though its really struggling to breathe.

i've had my eye on this product for some time.. how much $$ is it landed in AUS ?

what's the normal low-RPM noise like from the silencer itself ? like regular silencers are all farty and rattly (without modification) and i fear this one would be no different ?

any chance you can post pics with it installed in your muffler ?

for those who dont know it essentially works the same as your radiator cap.

Ditto on the last post.

Also Is it apexi exhaust specific?
I geuss would also be dependent on diameter...

Also interested in noise reduction. ANY chance you can get soem sound recordings. i.e. idle. idle without silencer. full rev range with without silencer...

It would be like the ONLY example of that on the internet anywhere. I have been searching high and low for something similar...

It does sound a little farty down low, but you're going to get that no matter what silencer you use, once you open it up though that's another story ;)

I'll try & organise some videos, it's hard as i only have a mobile phone or digital camera to record the sound....... still should give a good indication.

It is not Apexi specific, just need an exhaust with the same diameter and depth as it is fairly long.

Cost me $180 from memory, damn expensive but worth every penny in my books.

images form apexi usa. And from what i can gather only fits apexi products with part numbers:

155-A025 Silencer for GT Spec and N1 Turbo
155-A026 Silencer for N1 NA Canister

What must one do to earn one ?? :) haha

tell me if there is one that goes further up the system so it doesn't make that farty sound

Yeah, it was a little farty when i took that video, though since then i've had a resonator installed and it's not too bad now.

I don't think you'll find a silencer that didn't make some sort of farty noise, though these have the advantage of opening up and making a decent sound up top. There's also the flow advantages.
