hey guys, i've got a short shifter in my car. lately i've been noticing that every time the car is in 2nd or 3rd gear and the revs are around 2500rpm it makes a clicking/rattling noise. i know the rattling has been covered in previous threads but that's when the car is stationary as well. i find it weird that this click/rattle happens at a certain time and gear for me. i'm gonna ask my friend if he can tighten the short shifter from under the car & hope that might fix the problem. any ideas what this problem is? thx in advance...

Hitting the heat shield possibly?Or something not tightened..

^^ what he said, sometimes the OEM heat sheilds can cause havoc with linkages etc.

also double check the shifter fork to linkage is not too loose? or it could rattle.

Cheers Trav... so you reckon it's the heat shield.. but the thing is why does it only do it in 2nd or 3rd at a certain RPM, that is what confuses me?!?!

Would this problem affect fuel efficiency at all, or it's not related?

i dont understand how a short shifter can affect fuel economy. maybe ur driving it harder? and i guess the engine does more work coz its in gear more often.

man my fork to linkage is loose as a goose atm coz i was having major probs with the linkage and i also literally smashed the **** out of it after a tow trailer incident. but mine doesnt rattle when driving, only a lil at idle. im goin to tighten mine a lil soon.

what shifter is it?

maybe the short shifter has taken its toll on the GB.

hope its just hitting the exhaust as mentioned above .

the reason it makes the noise at the certain rpm is , well my guess, its the note the exhaust hits..cause more vibrations maybe

It's a B&M dual bend one shifter so it's pretty high quality...

maybe the short shifter has taken its toll on the GB >>>> sorry but what's a GB?

GB = gear box.

The reason why it will only rattle in certain gears is because the gear stick is in a different position. I would tighten up everything and while I'm under there I'd get someone to put it in 2nd and 3rd to see how close it is to the heat shield to see if thats causing any priblems.

You may be able to bend the heat shield a bit to make everything fit better. Only do this AFTER you've tightend up everything and you've heard a rattle still. Theres plenty of people on here that have short shifters (B&M, BC etc.) that don't have rattle probs.

Yeah but i don't think that would work cause it only rattles @ 2000-2500rpm. So testing it while i'm under the car wouldn't be any good i think. Geez i hope it's not the gearbox, cause i'm not rdy for a new gearbox/engine!

regardless of brand short shifters tend to hit the intermediate pipe.

my B&M vibrates coming off throttle in 5th at about 3500 rpm, as well as when hammering through 1st and 2nd on the odd occasion.
It happened pretty much straight after i put it in so i think its as n/a says. Just put the stock one back in and see if it still does it...

I'm removing my short shifter next service as I prefer the stock shifters feel much more.

I've been through 2 of the biatches too.... B&M and BC.. :(

i was thinking about getting skunk2. but i don't mind that much now, might get a new exhaust and see if it fixes it or re install it.

I had a look under the car when it was in fifth. there is a gap between the shifter and the exhaust, enough to be unsure whether the exhaust the reason.....
