Aim
hey i thought i make my own EK9 grill instead of getting a aftermarket one just for the fun of DIY.

NOTE: for tips regarding sanding and preping, please read claymore's detailed DIY in the ozhonda section.

Tool
+ OEM grill
+ Knife/Blade
+ blow torch (optional)
+ Masking Tape
+ Wet n Dry sandpaper 1000,1500,2000
+ Paint and Primer
+ Mesh
+ Liquidnail or screw with bracket

Step
1/ Get your grill and cut out the centre plastic bits. Use a blow torch to melt the plastic if its too hard to cut. Then use sandpaper to smooth off the edges that you've cut and it should look something like this

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/1782/p1010001zu4.jpg

2/ get your grill ready. use sandpaper (from 1000 to 15000 then 2000) to rub your grill till its nice and smooth. the paint will actually start to come off. NOTE: if you want tips and trick regarding sandpapering, please read Claymore's DIY on sandpaper in the Ozhonda DIY section

3/tape off the section which you dont wish to paint over. i decided to leave the black bits unpainted, look more OEM.

http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/2638/p1010002wy0.jpg

4/prime your grill evenly and let it dry naturally. beware of dust particles that gets on it, you might need to sand it back down again and try again.

http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/3255/p1010003cl9.jpg

5/once primer is dry, spray your coloured paint. give it 3 layers atleast. let it dry between layers ofcourse. once again becareful of dust particles when paiting.

http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/5498/p1010004ap9.jpg

6/and finally clear coat, and some cutting c
ompound, polish and wax. take off your tape and should have something similiar to this.

http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/1350/p1010006pn6.jpg

7/ with the mesh you could either secure it using brackets and nails, but i didnt have a drill so i decide to stick the top with liquidnail. you would need to measure the gap and cut the mesh into the desired size. unfortunately i dont have photo of these steps but if you have questions feel free to ask me. its quiet simple really.

now for the final finished product on the car.

EK4R
16-04-2007, 07:00 PM
ah i get what you mean. those are two difference grill i did.

the 2nd set of grill had the black plastic lefted in, however i decided to cut that out again just for looks. personal preference. it has no effect on the overall grill

where can you get mesh like that from?

where can you get mesh like that from?

Go to supercheap they have it in silver, pink, blue and i dunno about black prob just out of stock when i went. but its 30$ for a huge piece. 1200mm x 280mm.

to make the grill you'll only use a quarter of it. so if you want find another civic driver and go halvies lol thats what i did.

you've gotta remove the bumper.

there are two clips next to the 4 clips for the grill, two 10mm bolts under the car and an additiona two screws on the side just infront of the front tyres.

after that the bumper should come off pretty easily.

u mean i have to remove the bu,per to get at the grille? doesnt really make sense :S

yeah cause there are about 4 or 5 screws that makes the grill stuck to the bumper from underneath. hence you gotta remove the bumper to get to it.

This is seriously confusing me!
first of all from step 1 to 6 you are showing us a one piece grille from like a 96-98?
then from 7 to the end you use something totally different, from step 7 onwards you are using a later model grille the 2 piece one? is that right?

if you got the 2 part it should sandwich inbetween afaik

1 part, you can use cable ties or something

btw it is alittle different for 99-00 models so im not sure if it can be done..

it can be, i've done it to mine, the mesh just sits about 15 - 20mm further forward so it looks less CTR-ish but still looks waaaay beter than stock.

great guide, made my own will post pics up later thanks mate :)

edit*
here they are with pics, cutting off the centre honda plastic, sanding down and fitting the mesh between the 2 parts. i found another way to keep it steady without using glue or screws aswell, the final product very happy with it :) will upload a pic on the car when my new rims come in tomorrow ;)

oh my god, i was going to DIY a ek9 style mesh grill from my grill.
