I am guessing the this is the head gasket you are talking about? A new Cometic is $100USD +shipping. Install is 7 hrs of labor, what the book says but most can do it faster. Then there is retiming it. You may find you need new belts and a water pump. Have a pro look the car over and give you a rough estimate. Mine would be about $300USD for just the head gasket install and $150 for belt and water pump install, these include setting the timing.

Ohh ok, so roughly $500 would cover this up ?

I would say around $950 for a headgasket install + new timing belt and water pump, with oils/cooolant/cam seal.

I would be getting a mechanic to do a cylinder compression test on the engine to confirm that it is a head gasket. It could be a lot of things but most likely a head gasket.

Ok well that is $750USD so that's better. Most of that cost will be the parts.

if i was you id look at spending more on the motor and getting everything replaced, like piston rings, bearings etc.

DIY man, its fun and youll learn heaps!

Parts cost heaps more down here, little Johnny Howard(our Prime Minister) needs his 10% share and the extra freight to get the parts down under all adds up.

yeah i was thinkig of doing it myself.

but yeah, i should do a compression test on it first, just in case

I'm in the process of doing my head-gasket after it blew. Cost me USD$50 for an OEM Gasket from an ebay acura dealership in the states, so I bought two to make the $21 shipping a little better. Labour is free; Not replacing water pump or timing belt (looked fine).

Total Cost: ~$100

Might cost a bit more with some machining of the head if you're that way inclined.

Seriously... Buy a set of sockets and do it yourself. You'll save so much money, and have the tools at the end. ANYONE can do it.

Does anyone know how much a gasket kit from a honda dealer cost ?

you get a VRS kit from Honda

they cost about $400 ( prob more )

you get the head gasket, intake and exhaust manifold gasket, valve steam seals, a few O rings.

you will also be wanting to change the timming belt while your at it. No need to do the water pump unless its sus, or you have the spare $$$.

I always send the head to the head specialist, to check its surface for straightness and any defects, they usally machine the head surface or repair the head if its warped.

can cost anywhere from $70 to $400 for head repairs alone, then their is labour

you will be lucky to get change from 1k, but if your head is in good nic then you might be in luck.

if you have the skills then DIY

Honda wanted $356 (if you someone behind the counter) for the gasket set in question. The headgasket on it's own was $152. From USA Acura dealerships they are only USD$50. Definately do NOT buy them from Australian dealers unless you enjoy forking out excess hard earned cash for no reason.

So means im best to look for parts overseas ?

Definately if you don't have deep pockets. It only takes 10 minutes to scour honda-tech.com for a trusted dealer and you're away.

Alternatively, and if you don't like paypal or trust international visa transactions, you pay more here.

There are two options. One is simple, one is easy. One is a 100% rip-off. The other is a 50% rip off :D

Unless your time is worth $300/hour, buy them from overseas.

"aofeparts" was the name of the guy I bought off (on american ebay). He doesn't have any D-Series head-gaskets listed, but i'm sure if you message him he can get them for you. (Assuming you are D-series, otherwise, no dramas). He was fantastic to deal with. Parts were shipped very quickly and cheaply. Can't recommend enough.

So means im best to look for parts overseas ?

all depends how long you can do with your car off the road.

if parts arive quickly then your in luck, if they take time to get here then Id rather fork out and get them localy to get the car going again.

Definately the reason which I went the route I did... My car's been off the road for over a month so far, and that's no problem. Work is a 10 minute bike ride away, uni is a 25 minute walk.

If you have a serious job though, I guess turning up to work sweaty from a hard ride just isn't an option :D

Yes. It's a genuine kit and it's cheap. But it's only good value if you need everything it comes with.
