it all depend on how hard you drive and burn the oil...
its a per car per driver senario
I check and top up if neccessary the Vl commordore every 3-4 weeks and my honda every 2-3 weeks

If its a new engine, you shouldn't need to top up at all.
But you should at least check it once a month or two, just to be sure there isn't a new oil leak/burn problem with the engine.

If the engine has done like 100,000km+ then it would eat more oil due to engine wear and leaks, therefore you need to check the oil level once a week or fortnight and top up if needed.

Its not really a good idea to rely on the "Low Oil" light on the dash, because usually that lights up when there is already a substantial oil loss, and the sensor/light could be inaccurate or faulty.

I usually top mine up every 3 weeks - drive hard, plus slight leak out of the oil drain plug which I'm changing next oil change.
