Hi all,
I've just joined this forum so BIG hello to all the users.
Anyways I have Euro 03' model and thinking of installing the navigation system at the moment.
What would be the best option?
1. Buy the indash Navigator for Euro 06' and install them? (Will this fit 03' model?)
2. Buy the after market indash Navigator and install in HU?
3. Buy the after market Navigator such as Tomtom?
Cheers!!

Option 1 is too expensive. You will need about $10,000 (read this somewhere).
Option 2 is possible by sacrificing your CD compartment. You can fit in a single DIN fold out navi screen
Option 3 is the cheapest. Will cost you only $500-600.
I'm using option 3.

You can take option #2 as well. But if your car is broken into, they will take #2 with them, while with #3, you can carry it around with you.

July 06 issue of Choice magazine has a review on portable GPS kits from $799-1200 rrp
Summary:
1. Portable system requires satellite locks, which can take a while compared to in-car system. Satellite lock may be impossible in heavily build-up areas, eg CBD because of the tall buildings. In-car system continues to calculate route even when satellite lock is not possible, because it continues to calculate speed from the car motion
2. The database is from Where-is, but each brand uses the information differently. There is big difference in user-interface, route calculation accuracy and direction accuracy.
3. Most system have short battery only life of 1-2 hrs.
4. Some screen are very reflective in daylight. Others have poor night time screen adjustment.
5. The most expensive unit is not necessarily the best (!)
6. Cheaper unit may not allow you to store commonly used waypoints, eg your home address etc.
Am I allow to name which is the recommended best buy? maybe pm me if you are interested.
Can you tell me which one? Please pm me if this you're not allowed to tell here.

Units tested were TomTom One, Garmin StreetPilot C320, Navman ICN 520, Mio 268, RoadAngle Navigator.
I have also read reviews of Navaman ICN320 from other sources.
You can get this info if your local council library has subscription to Choice, it is in the July 06 issue.

Uhhh... those are GPS units that give you coordinates or a compass. They are not GPS mapping units.

Another option is if you have a PDA with bluetooth, you can buy a wireless bluetooth GPS unit and navigation software to run on your PDA.
I've used Destinator PN and Tomtom Navigator, and I'm very happy with both.

I reckon TomTom's more descriptive, but Destinator has the sexy british female voice.

Try this link for choice's online version of the July 06 (http://choice.com.au/viewarticleasonepage.aspx?id=105283&catId=100463&tid=100008&p=1) article. Luckily, it is free to non-subscriber.
heres a cheaper option :)
$1 fuel - drive down to your local servo
$50 - buy a melway
$2.50 - buy a chocolate bar from the counter
total: $53.50
sat nav is such a waste of money - i reckon people just get it because it looks cool. would rather get an in dash dvd player for the same price.

Stopping by the side of the road to check your melway 20 times on the way to destination - priceless. :)

but when u r flipping ur melway using a hand looking for routes and holding the steering wheel using the other hand... how concentrated can u be on traffic?

bwaha tru tru. Using a street directory is an annoyance especially when you cant find a spot to pull over.. Actually my friend who is a courier puts the street directory on the steering wheel while drinking a red bull and having a ciggy while racing through traffic lol. So safety can be drastically improved with a GPS
All this GPS portable using 3D map, is there any unit that using 2D map?

Destinator has an option to switch between 3D and 2D modes.

kam: Yeah true. If you go somewhere unfamiliar, you still need a proper street directory as a backup for the GPS.
Destinator tried to have me drive through a lake once. :/
Yeah, I prefer the 2D mode too, I find it easier to interpret.
Tomtom has the slicker interface, but Destinator is far more powerful in terms of it's search abilities. Just a pain that it's generally not as stable as Tomtom, and doesn't work with my O2 Atom (can't talk to the BT GPS).
Oh yeah, and you can choose from about 5000 different voices with Tomtom. Including an Australian guy called 'Ken'.

Always use the GPS as a guide. If you are stupid enough to listen to every command... then don't drive a car.
BTW, GPS told me to turn right when I was on the middle of a bridge. LOLOL....
And when in Melbourne, GPS told me to drive on the path that the Spirit of Tasmania took to get to Tassie. WTF

This is dependent on how each manufacturer implement the street navigation and this is also why Choice magazine said there is a big difference in in-car performance eventhough the map database comes from the same source.
I got an unknown bug with my factory SatNav:
On the weekend, I fed this address into my factory SatNav: 16 Kensington Street, East Perth and got a funny message: 'The disc in the DVD player cannot be read. Please check the disc. If this happens again, please have the system inspected at your nearest workshop.'
Took my car to the my Honda dealer. He inserted another disc and the same thing happened again, so it is unlikely to be a disc database problem. He said he will ask Honda HQ in Melbourne and get back to me.
If you have 06 Euro with SatNav, you may also have similar issue. Don't know about portables.

OMG haven't the GPS units come a long way since 06, the posts in this thread seem to indicate that. Anyway, to resurrect an old one, I was wondering if anyone had mounted an after market unit to the dash, or anywhere else other than the normal windscreen mount. I saw one mounted tidily on a BMW dash today that effectively brought the unit twice as close as if compared to the bottom of the screen mount position in a CL9. This appealed to me as both sound and vision are improved. I did a quick search here, but found nothing. Any ideas, pics or leads would be appreciated.

Would something like this work for you?
http://www.holdmyphone.net/Accord-Euro-03-08/Centre-Mount.html
Screwless, but you have to add an actual 'holder' as well, because this is just the mounting plate.
I'm currently using an Arkon vent clip with universal holder for my phone/GPS, and it works well enough. I can get an adaptor for the Clicon mounts that will allow me to attach the Arkon universal holder to the Clicon base.

Cool thanks for the link. This site has all the hardware I need, including the holder for the Garmin 765 I plan to buy. Just need to work out the mounting point.
