Hey, im going to DIY valve adjustment on my car for the tappets becase it making that ticking noise. i was just wondering though-

my sepcs are:

Intake 0.003" - 0.005"
Exhaust 0.006" - 0.008"

now when adjusting the valve, would it be better to adjust it to the smaller number ie - 0.003 and 0.006 or inbetween?

do i want it so that the feeler gauge is tight with the smaller range? i read the diy but i jsut wanted to double check. thanks a lot for the help!

the limits are the minimum number and maximum number.
Aim for inbetween.

so say for intake i put in a 0.004" and make it tight so that the feeler gauge is just able to slide out that should be alright?

Yes. Just make sure the engine is dead cold (alteast 2 or 3 hours off) too :)

I would set the tappets to

I = 0.10mm
E = 0.18mm
at camshaft

with stone cold engine

as you mentioned you want just a bit of drag on the gauge but not to much.

good luck

thanks for that. so ill aim for the median range then.

also the locknuts are they very tight or easy to loosen and when tightening them up again you dont need to really give it much?

i watched the video on the diy by ecuman and u didnt seem to turn very hard to tighten it.

you dont do them up really tight, just nip them up firmly.

they should not be tight to undo either, but with age and engine sludge some times they are a bit on the tight side.

also just to explain to you in that video

I loosen the lock nut and mke an adjudtment then very loosly do up the nut and check the clearence, it was to tight so the nut was easly to loosen to readjust.

I repeated until I got the desiered clearence then when im happy with it I finally nipped it up.
