Hi guys,

I have been looking for a 2nd runnabout car and have decided to buy a Honda Civic.

It's a 1995 VTi. I have read up on the Civic specs on this forum and am very confused about the car I am about to buy.

This forum states that:

Civic Vti
Released: 1993-2000
Engine1: '93-94 1.6L SOHC VTEC 16-valve 96kW@6,800rpm
Engine2: '95-00 1.6L SOHC 16-valve 88kW
Code1: D16Y1, (D16Y8-VTi Coupe)
Code2: D16Y5

I am assuming that because I am buying a 1995 model, and at a price premium too, that I get the 88kw engine?! Is this correct? That's so sad! If this is the case it doesn't look like I'll be buying this car tomorrow!

Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Actually do you know which shape you are currently looking at?

As Honda Australia made the change over to the 88kw one with the new model in later 1995.

So just check which model you are looking at.

EG will mean the 96kw one whereas the EK will be the 88kw engine.

Cheers mo. Good stuff! It's definitely the older shape (eg) which is the shape I prefer. It's listed as $15k but I am sure I can get this price down to $13k on the day (tomorrow) if I wave a bit of cash about. And it's only done 75,000km's and has full service log-books with Rick Demilian. Pricey but I am sure it will be a reliable little daily driver.... please stop me if I am being severely ripped off here?

we can't really advise you unless you list what the car has or hasn't got and the condition its in. by the way you'll be lucky if you can knock $2000 off this car if it has 75000km and log books to prove it. but thats just my opinion.

Fair call MR-VTEC.

I have spoken to the owner, who is a lady who has loved this civic since she bought it new (she just purchased a new golf convertible). She seemed super nice over the phone.

It's a 3 door hatch, genuine 75000kms, black, electric sunroof and windows, air conditioned, good tyres, manual, rego 9/2004, keyless entry, alarm and service records.

It all sounds amazing and it's looking like it's mine first thing tomorrow morning. If so I'm looking forward to reading up on all the past posts on this site and getting into it all.

all ek vti's have the sohc vtec engine, 96kw.
not 100% sure with eg vti, but i'm guessing its the same.

normally gli/cxi you get the non-vtec 88kw versions, otherwise its not hard to check, just get a shot of the engine bay/code, or even go have a look at it yourself.

vti sedan doesn't! it's only got 88kw the only vti in the ek that has 96 is the coupe

OK I am getting a little confused but I am starting to get it. Let's see if I get this right:

ALL AUSTRALIAN 1995 Civic hatchback (EG) VTi models are not DOHC like the ones on countless overseas sites I have been reading? But they have ABS and rear disc brakes and everything else the JDM had except for DOHC?

This is mighty strange!

AUDM EG VTIs are SOHC VTEC and they come with 4 disc brakes (some have ABS some don't, depends which year)

If you are after DOHC in an EG, then you are after a Si model Civic...

AUDM models are quite diff from overseas models.

OK I get it now. Cheers mo. I thought I was buying a DOHC car for $15k. Unbelievable that it still costs so much for a SOHC then? Honda quality holds it's price I suppose. I have searched for Si's and can't find any of them with low km's. BUMMER. I will still test drive this car tomorrow in any case. It is going to be a daily driver afterall.

I test drove many 180sx's all under $15k and all of them were damn fast and all under 70,000kms but insurance is expensive, people will try to steal the car.. etc et thus I am looking at a stealthy Civic.

Ahh...Honda holds it value...No doubt about that...Hard to compare a cheap import to a locally delivered car.

$15k is kinda pricey but in fact if what you said above is true...It maybe worth it..but I'd still try to haggle the price down :D

Can I just ask one more question? :)

I have seen a few EK shaped VTi-R's for sale at this price too. They are newer and have DOHC VTEC which produces more power than the EG VTi I am looking at right?

So these EK VTi-R's are more powerful, faster?

mo

Yes the EK VTi-R's produce more power.
I would definitely snap up a EK4 (VTI-R) as opposed to a VTI :D

if it is going to be your daily driver it's probably worth noting that the SOHC vtec will sip petrol, you should get VERY good petrol usage when driven sensibly.

If you get the EK VTIR expect to spend large ammounts of money on modifications as you will turn into a speed racer / rev head =)

Oh also have to add that the EK4 will definitely not SIP petrol hahaha....it will probably GULP petrol down as opposed to the EG VTI

There's no way that it would gulp more petrol than my GT-R surely? ;)

Sad though as I love the shape of the EG so much more. Will test drive and I'll be back tomorrow afternoon with either a schmick little EG or I'll be looking to buy an EK. Thanks for all the help guys. MUCH APPRECIATED.

I just bought the car! Owner was a lovely lady who prefered to have sold it to a lady driver. I promised her I wouldn't thrash the car ;) (hehehe).

She'd done so many services on the car and I saw all receipts and log books. Man Rick Demilian service is expensive! Many of them were in the $600+ range!!!

I managed to bargain her down from $15k to $13k! How's that? I'm just such a charmer :)

So here's to hanging out on these forums, daily, from now on :)

SoundStreamer, haha. Yes. I used to be super into Aquarium fish!

Nuttz. Easy done! I'll be sure to take the resonator off and replace with a straight through pipe asap.

Sounds like a good purchase dude, probably worth the extra dollars if it's in such good condition (and if you own a GTR then hey, what the heck, what's another 13k? ;)). Come along to the Terrigal meet this weekend if you've got the time :)
