i was driving my car hard tonight after i ust got it registered after 6 months
and I heard alot of funny noises coming from the engine bay
upon inspection i noticed my alternator belt was shreaded and about to snap it had lots of threads coming off it
so i cut it off

now the question is would higher rpm up to 9k shorten the life of the belt?
I'm pretty shure its has done less then 15,000k's only
The alternator seems to still spin fine and nothing was in the way to cause any damage to it
This is my stock b18a LS alternator now on my B20

i'm not shure didnt touch it for as long as i rember
wouldnt of been loose i would of know coz it woudl be noise but maybe overtentioned who knows?
whould the alternator not want to spin at such rpm and create extra lag on the motor and belt?

i some what kinda doubt that, unless it was over tightened
it's more like the power steering pump and a/c that puts load.
but if the alternator does, it would be minimal in my opinion.

Sounds like a tensioning problem or damaged belt. Look for signs on the belt and pulley.

If the bearing had/has seized you'd be able to tell but turning the pulley.

the bearing seems fine and spins freely but without a load wouldnt be able to tell 100%

Put a load on it and listen to the alternator with the backend of a screwdriver for any vibrations :)

If the bearing was farked......that would most probably go before the belt shreaded itself. You should be able to smell the burning of the bearing too.

yer i guess it would smell and if the belt was slipping that would stink of burning rubber...
