View Full Version : 3rd Gear crunches when VTEC is going hard!!

fellaz,
Ive noticed that everytime i hit VTEC on second gear 8000rpm then switching to 3rd it "crunches" but still goes in ..
it does this when vtec is going over 6500 to 8000rpm and only on 3rd gear.
but if i was just driving normally it goes in from 2nd to 3rd no worries - no crunches!!
is this normal for a JDM B16A OBD1 with EF CRX cable tranny?
i just bought the tranny secondhand from a known honda wrecker and i think 3rd gear is gone .. it came with 3months warranty
i also hear some winding noises too but very softly.
or could it be i need to adjust the clutch cable more?
Clutch / bearings is new and flywheel machined.
any help?

Probably your 3rd gear synchros are worn. When you shift 2-3, leave it in neutral for a little while longer.

yeh when i do that ..its ok ..
but when ur having "fun runs" u cant be on hangin' round neutral for long ...as every second counts!! :p

You could always pay to replace the synchros.... :p
Not cheap, but in the long run it will save the teeth from being munched slowly.

synchos are cheap, labour of removing the g/b and pulling it apart and putting it back in will cost you alot.
Definately its the schrons. If your gonna replace it, change all the bearings and seals.

i'd rule out engine mounts first before the synchros

This car involves modified teg(i think) shift links as well,if that helps the diagnosis....

Yeah sounds like the synchros. Although a tranny oil change can do wanders some times ;) Give a refreshment of Honda MTF a go.

yeah do this. loose/missing/incorrect mounts can contribute to iffy gear changes

If it was engine mounts, wouldn't he crunch 2nd as well? But check them anyway.
Change MTF first as suggested by EuroDude.

depends... with honda engines, when you rev on idle (looking at it from front of car), does the engine sway backwards or forwards?
a dead synchro isn't dependent on load whereas engine mounts are when the engine is forced out of normal position. fanging 3rd (which is probably the best gear for eveyr car) justifies this and not fanging it and not having the symptom also does.
i'm pretty sure all cars are affected by this.

It depends on which engine. My K-series sways backwards, while the B might sway forward.

There is no engine movements at all!! i have got custom poly mounts all round. and they are still as hell!!
so when i rev on idle i dont even see the engine move!!

already know how to double clutch ...but no need to use it ..u just have to know how much pedal should be put down on what RPM ..
ive had a run with some dude who double clutched and still killed him ..and i didnt even had to double clutch.

damn straight you did... double clutching only wastes time on upshifting... it's for downshifting...

do as the others suggest though, check the engine mounts etc. as that'll be easier than swapping boxes then discovering it wasn't the boxes fault

yeh i will double check again ...but i highly doubt that ..coz all the engine mounts are all new..
i think it could be my clutch cable as its already on its max. adjustment and i think its not enough to fully release the centre bearing on the clutch ..which of course will crunch the g/box .. might have to use integra LS cable instead of the concerto stockies.
its like changing to a gear without using the clutch!! ehehe

fair enough, just wanted you to rule it out first as its a free check.
next free check are the bushings for your "modified teg shift links" making sure that the gears engage properly
then goin through process of elimination, fluid change is the next cheapest.. keep an eye out for metal shavings too when you drain.

appreciate it !!
the custom TEG links are fine too .. they are engaging ok ..
its got new oil shaft seals, tranny oil, ... flywheel is a type R machined and new exedy racing clutch too! new bearings and all ...
i think its the g/box 3rd synchros are a gonner!! might aswell return it and get another one since its still under warranty.
well keep u posted on how it goes ...

all good!
do yourself a favour and contact a registered emchanic on here or something to vouch that they did the install for you... at least that way warranty is guaranteed:D
unlike clutch, flywheel getting done at the same time and having the one labour cost, synchro replacement requires the gb to be opened up.

ah shit so even if i get my clutch replaced, i wouldnt be able to change my synchros? ah thought u had to open the gb aswell for that . :(
