i was driving my car yetserday on the freeway and noticed a slight rattle noise that was getting louder and louder mostly between 2-3k RPM
after 5-10 mins the oil temp was slowly creeping up to about 90 deg of the freeway and i got a oil cooelr also and it never goes over 70 when driving easy
i also noticed the oil pressure dropped a little like 10psi now sitting at 50 not 60 while driving
i pulled over and inspected all seemed fine
i started it up againe
and hear a horred knocking and squeeking sounds coming from the bottom end
i'm takign it to the mechanic next week to have a look
i got it towed home last night
so i'm just wondering what does a spun bearing sound like?
could this be it
the motor seems to still run fine but dont want to start it...
turns over fine just noisy
the motor is a b20 with b18 head only 5,000K's old
its got a type r crank
crower rods and cp pistons
its a sleeved block with type r block girdel
and it has been tuned properly

badluck dude, hope you get it fixed soon.
My money is on spun bearings.

possibly... hopefully its not a broken psiton or anything

What did you do previously that might have caused a spun bearing?

Got a knock and whines, sounds like one to me. Not a good thing either, as long as the rods and mains on the block are ok you won't have to tear the motor out. If they need machining then you have some work ahead of you. I hope you caught it early so there isn't a lot of damage, except I bet the crank will need a grinding and polishing.

To my knowledge my engine has a spun bearing.
I get that rattly sound too, and vibrations as well. Mechanic told me it is likely a rod bearing or something
But I have been driving, and treating the engine quite harshly without problems.
So, does this eliminate the chance of me having a spun bearing?
I don't really care as I got a new engine rebuilt because of this but still wouldn't mind know what was wrong with the original engine

doesnt sound anywhere as harsh as my car
it could possibly be spun or just worn bearings...
I get a loud sqeeking sound as well
do you get any of that

was the crank machined when the engine was built ?? do you know or remmeber. also what bearings where used for the bottom end ??do you have a record of the clearnces from when it was built.
check your distributor, look for metal bits in it, take it off, make sure its not seizing. ( dizzy squeel when they fail )
hope it works out in your favour and is just a silly problem and nothing major.

My sound is quite loud too. It is a distinct rattly sound which is quite obviously coming from the engine
Also, it has some vibrations especially at high rpm and most noticable from the clutch

I would get that looked at Spetz, more things will need fixing the longer you wait. You might just need new bearings, but the crank might need machining too. The least you'll spend is about $250USD and the most could be a new motor!
Also sounds more like the crank bearings than rods. Just get her on a lift, drop the pan, then drop the three inner main caps and check clearances. Then put on the middle three mains, drop the outter ones and check them. That will tell you fast. You can also put new ones in if the crank looks good. Cheaps and quick fix. You can also do the rods the same way.

The oil pressure loss is a worry...
Did you put a new oil pump in the car when the motor was built?

yes the pump was new and the soud is definetly from the bottom end and very loud.. taking it to GPC hopefully its all under warrenty...

how old is the motor dude? i know GPC give 3 months warranty.

It should be under warranty
Charlie gave me 10,000km warranty on my conversion, and that's why the new engine is going in cuz this one is stuffed (but it has never been rebuilt, just a stuffed front cut)
Also, I don't really care what happens to this engine is it's getting also rebuilt to be put in into another car

Yes it was the bearing
the conrod bearing is gone
as soon as i droped the sump i noticed the cap was darker then the others so its been overheated
i'm going to machine the crank and conrod and replace all bearngs then it should be good and ready for sale...
