Hey everyone,
I've just sold my egg of a proton and i'm looking for a Prelude.
I have about $7500 and i'm looking for some advice.

*NOTE: Perth sucks in that there are very little preludes around and so theyre a wee bit more expensive.

NOW...Do i go for a 1990-91 3rd gen model, find the best one i can and have money left over for timing belt and stereo etc.

Or do i wait patiently for a 92-93 in my price range... with no sunroof rust and as low k's as possible? Keeping in mind i'll be waiting a while regardless cos of the Perth drought.

My boyfriend has a 90 model and its mad to drive and i love it, but something about the 92-93s that are schmick. i love the digi dash and the shape.

i just worry i'm being unrealistic to think i can find one in my price range and what i want.

For a week i was concidering a Celica... then i drove one... YUK!

What do youz wreckon? ? :thumbdwn: ?

go for the 92-96 models.
the 4th gens, they're alot nicer in my opinion.

yeah go for the 92-96 as its newer but you would need to spend more for a decent one. You might be lucky to get a 92 for that price but the milage would be pretty high. Just becareful with old preludes as they tend to have alot of problems.

hey dude.
with 7.5k u can buy a more modern car.
not a '91 lude with no power options and properly stuffed up a/c.
my advice is.
save up alittle more money and buy yourself a 4th gen si for around 8-9k depending on condition.
or perhaps u can buy an EG or even a EK for that amount that u spend on a lude.

well i have 8.5k but my hope was to spend less on the car and then put a stereo and service etc...
i would be very happy with a gen 3 but want one that looks good... i'm over rust and worn seals etc. i drove a 90 lude yesterday that was 5k but i feel spending a couple g's on making it look decent isn't really worth it.

theres plenty Si's on the east coast that i've found through carsales etc that are more in my price range but theres bugger all in perth.

not all that into Civics. I'm dead set on a prelude.

well, if you're dead set on a prelude, how about you do some dead set on saving. cuz with that kinda budget, all you're going to get is a pile of shit that you'll complain about.

Why do you say that, if she is patient adn waits for the right one, like it sounds like she is willing to do then her budget should be fine.

I picked up a 94 vtir for that price. No complaints yet.

ayy, the above medicine sure tastes like shit.....lol

but its very true and accurate

coz u wont be gettin a good lude for that much

91, 3rd gen, too many problems and too old

93-96, 4th gen, newer, less problems but ur looking at over 10k for a descent example

save up, u wont regret it

you will regret it if u but some old POS that u need to replace parts for every month

but arent there plenty of peops on here with gen 3s that they love and are happy with??

krogoth
27-09-2006, 08:31 PM
its like buying a 32 gtst

except the 3rd gen lude, is slower, lol

u gota have a passion and alot of time, coz old cars like that will have lots of minor and major problems

sure u can get one in mint condition

but yool spend heeps of time fixing all these small things

theres nuffin wrong wit a gen 3, u just gota look for a good one, just make sure everythings ok, if he wants a gen3 let him get one, i got one a no big problems at all,

Simson

Yeh... i mean i'm a former proton owner.. so i know what minor problems are all about! except that my car was a 98 and it was happening.
I just love the drive of the prelude and i understand the age of any model i can afford, will have its problems. but thats part the fun.
I wanna find one firstly thats not silver! haha and that looks fairly good for its age and that drives like a prelude...
:)
i'm now edging towards a gen 3 but i'll ultimately go for the first one i see and drive that i fall in love with. i just know that the gen 4s are harder to come by and wanna know your opinions on whether its worth the wait or whether its realistic in my budget.

decisions!!

i'm trying to be patient but it blows bubbles not having a car!

Thanks will do...
Theres one i'm looking at today.. which has done plenty of k's but had it reconditioned 60000k's ago... i'm gona go check it out and see...
the 270000k's scares me a bit but might be cool if everything's been done.
will let youz know what its like. along with another couple this weekend.. all being gen 3.

I'd definetly go the 3rd gen for $7500, the only 4th gen which will outperform it is the VTiR which will cost you well over 10k.

I much prefer the 3rd gen styling over the newer 4th gen. The 4th gen just never lived up to the 3rd gens superb drive, not to mention the 4th gens interior...

I think the 4th gen is showing how old it is, while the 3rd gen keeps its timeless, not gimicky looks. Obviously you'll proberbly struggle to find one in good condition, but 7500 is in the upper end of 3rd gen prices.

Obviously this is just my opinion, some prelude owners love the 4th gen styling, but i much prefer the 3rd gen / 5th gen.

Definitely go the 3rd gen... you can get a good example for $7,500.

I bought my 1991 S2 3rd gen for $10k but it's mint and only 68,000kms on it. I've had it for a year and there have been no problems at all. None.

And also, the 3rd gen (as with most preludes) had power everything: mirrors, windows, sunroof etc.

Come over to preludeaustralia.com and we'll help you out =)

i've found a gen 3...
its gun metal grey, 180000kms and i have him down to 5g.
Body is close to mint and interior is awesome.
its had its timing belt done at 150000kms and new clutch and muffler.
drives SOOO smooth!
i've had an RAC inspection on it and i pick up the report this afternoon...
wish it/me luck aye! :)
i'll post up picks if i get it

Simson

no good guys...

i'm spewin... report came back with everything good except body.

front left guard misaligned, front right bumper pushed in (making lights pop up noisily), boot misaligned, left front door misaligned.. and too many scratches...

gonna give that one a miss but if i'm desperate i'll talk to my panel beater cos engine wise this thing was sweet.

i'm seeing another tomorrow... *sigh*

def getting one but

Yep, still plenty out there.

Couldn't you pick the problems when you inspected it yourself? They sound quite obvious.

Simson
09-10-2006, 09:23 AM
RAC dudes pick up every little thing so its worth it.
i love my cars, but i'm not all that mechanically minded... liek i wouldnt be able to pick up the kinda stuff they do
i wanted the RAC check on this one especially cosa the panel work that i knew was a bit dodge.

i'm grumpy now but cos i've seen every prelude in perth :( saw a mad black one but cruise didnt work and the interior was a bit shabby, while we saw a mad silver one interior but the exterior was shabby. and saw a red one that had too many mini mods i didnt like... except for the zenetti's they were hot...

BAHH i'm frustrated aye...
the only non honda i'd consider would be a probe and theyre mostly auto. :|

is that at the fly or wheels???
coz ive run heaps on my private track and they are fkn slow straight line and put them on the twisties they dont fail to depress lol

thats in my 5th gen

ive had a couple runs with a couple friends in their third gens, straight line they are a lil short on power but on the twisties the 4ws kicks some serious arse!

rogue_mc
10-10-2006, 11:49 AM
Yeah the 3rd gen has excellent handling and the steering is very responsive.

You'll find with the probe that it is much heavier and the steering is pretty wooden.

I'd still proberbly prefer the 3rd gen. But if you got this for under 10k, good work!
