today, i put in the 98 spec cluster into my 97 gsi, other things all working except for the petrol indicator, when i was driving it went all the way down below the red mark , then after i got home, turned it off then turned the car on to let it idle, it went all the way up past F mark, so anyone knows what problem that is , cheers, BTW others all working fine.

i had a similar problem dude.

i totally cbf typing this but itll help u

I hope you still have your old cluster, this is what u need to do.

MATERIALS
1 X old cluster
1 X jdm 98 cluster
1 Screw Driver

It is pretty simple, just dont lose anything ok.

Take off all screws, take out all bulbs, everything.

Swap the green plastic circuit board from the OLD board onto the NEW cluster.

Screw everything back in. Don't mix up your screws, remember what goes where as there are different screws for different holes.

I am just posting up these pics...i dont know why actually, maybe in some way they will help you, or others understand wtf is going on.

Yeah,as bungsai did,or u could just depin the plug & change the yellow/white wire from the number 3 position to the number 1 position, prob a lot simpler.

What u will find is when u were driving the fuel guage is actually hooked up to the seat belt switch atm.

When u plug the seat belt in,its giving a very high resistance,ie open circuit,to the fuel guage, thus running it all the way down to Empty & beyond.

When u were idling u didnt have the seatbelt on,thus a small resistance,ie dead short,& guage going up over Full.

I just hope u havent damaged the guage by over running it.

U'll prob have to change the seatbelt reminder wire as well (the one in 1st position atm) to the 8th position(by the looks of the photo above, hard to tell, just trace the seat-belt light back to the connector)

After seeing the photo of your cluster(i thought the seat belt reminder was down the bottom near the fuel light on 98+'s) u need to put the seat belt wire in the number 2 position, just in case anyone gets confused by my post above.
