View Full Version : VTEC Solenoid Question... B16A
How can i find where the VTEC solenoid is on my B16A???
i need 2 find out where it is and clean it all out... if that doesnt work i need a new solenoid im lead to believe...
is there a tutorial on how to change or service your solenoid...
im a noob wen it comes to this... but im going 2 DIY...

right next to your dizzy, if your looking at your motor
it'll be on the left of the cylinder head.

Disconnect the grey & green elec plugs.
Remove the screw(blue circle) for the lead holder.
Undo the 3 bolts(red circles).
Pull valve assembly away from engine & inspect the filter that lies between this assembly & the cylinder head.

If the filter is clean, remove the 3 bolts below so u can take the solenoid off the valve assembly & make sure the valve moves freely with your finger.
Inspect the o ring u find in here as well,replace/clean if necessary.

To replace,
Torque all the bolts back in evenly to 12Nm,making sure the o ring & filter are seated correctly in both cases.
Make sure your solenoid(grey plug) is reading between 15-30ohms between plug & engine block before u remove the whole thing from the motor.
wow, kool... ill definently try this out...
id say my filter is blocked...
i pulled off my solenoid and the filter was fine... but i noticed around the upper part of my solenoidhad no oil.
so im wondering why theres isnt any oil... maybe not enough pressure perhaps???
i checked the valve and spun it... it was smooth but had some very slight rough parts as i spun it...
the valve, is it meant to sit just above the solenoid block??? coz i could push it in and itll rise again... im a noob dw...
wheres the o-ring??? i was looking for it... it was getting dark so i assembled every again... coz i needed 2 use the car 2day...

Is this a genuine EG6?
Any additional tuning modules wired in?
If your happy that the wire between solenoid & ecu is unbroken & not grounded anywhere, then put it all back together & with the solenoid wire disconnected, touch 12 V(battery is easiest source) on the wire coming from the solenoid & see if u can hear it click as u touch it on & off.
Wont work if solenoid not attached to engine as it gets its ground thru the block or u could hold a ground wire on the solenoid housing if u wish not to put it all together.
No click = new solenoid.
the car isnt genuine eg6...
the engine is tho JDM B16A... w/jap oem eg6 ecu

Def check your wiring then,a lot of dodgy wiring gets done on swaps, especially the wires u gotta add like vtec solenoid.
Check its continuous back to ecu pin A4(ie unbroken),with plugs disconnected from solenoid & ecu.
Then make sure its not continuous to ground(ie not shorted to ground)
ill give it a test...
wats the cause for a code 21 - vtec spool valve???

ill give it a test...
wats the cause for a code 21 - vtec spool valve???
Not sure of the electronics setup, but I know mine will only read an activation fault,ie no fault code is produced until the ecu tries to activate the vtec solenoid,so it doesnt seem to do a pretest to see if its present.
So it must register an abnormal or no current flow reading from the expected value calculated from the 15-30 ohm normal resistance reading of the solenoid, when it supplies it with 12 V to activate.
Btw if u have got a multimeter put it across the solenoid to see if u get the 15-30 ohms specified, more accurate substitute for the click test.
how can i clean the solenoid???
i was told 2 use petrol... or can i use that carby cleaner???
so i can make sure the valve is clean...
