Hi,

Was looking at some documentation today that informed me of temperatures that thermostats opened at.

Spoons opens at 60 degrees
J'S Racing - ARC and Sard all open at 68, and Mugen at 70.

What is the difference? Why would spoon set it at 60 and Mugen at 70.

What is the OEM ?

oem is either 78 or 87, i think the latter, for b series.

if you were driving very hard, the thermostat opening sooner woudl mean reduced risk of your car getting over ideal temp - ie if the rate at which it was heating up was so rapid that opening the thermostat at 87 was not enough to curb the buildup, opening it sooner might work

Spoon parts are for racing setups. Race cars are usually warmed up fully before being pushed hard. Same as for Honda owners who are down to the minute detail of their cars and want racing parts. They are those who let their car idle for 5 minutes in the morning just to get it warmed up before driving (and eating breakfast while waiting, you know who you are. ).

Mugen parts are more for street sports. Therefore the cars that probably have the Mugen thermostat will probably be driven after the engine is started for a few minutes. The owners still love their cars but are not 100% anal about warming up. Hence it is better to get the engine up to operating temperature as quick as possible. Therefore 70 is a compromise between OEM and racing.
