View Full Version : How long do brake pads last?
It's me ... Mario

Hi all,
I've had my DC2R for just over 3 years now (bought it second hand) and just had 110K on the clock. I've just recently serviced it my self and did a visual inspection on all things as per manual.
Having a look at the brake pads on all 4 corners and they all look fine. However I sat down and thought, geez the pads been on the car for, like, 6 years.
This brings me to my question, do they have a use by date? Am I suppose to change them after a certain amount of time even if they are not that worn out? I thought I saw something in the manual about changing them after a certain amount of time, but I can't seem to find it anymore...........
Cheers.

usually 6 months, all depends on your driving.
Drive it hard expect to change it sooner.

6 months?!
dude, you must do some really heavy breaking everyday
lol.
i was leaning towards a year if you drove hard.
i just had mine changed few weeks ago, 110,000kms on the clock, pads were still o.k though, probz last another 10,000kms
like phantom civic said: drive hard=change earlier

To answer your question - your break pads do not have a use-by-date. Keep going till they need replacing...

That is a 'how long is a piece of string' type of question.
I'd say it would depend on the driver, k's travelled, type of driving done, brake pad brand, rotor material and condition, etc, etc, etc.
If you're concerened, just change them. I believe it's one particular part of the car where a bit of money spent (within reason, of course) can always be justified.

my last set of ds2500s on the front lasted almost 3 years. Previous set of bendix lasted about year and a half...so it just depends....

It all depends on braking habbits, time you spend driving, and materials you use. Mine have lasted 3 years and are for racing, you can barely tell they've been used as if I put a new pad next to them the old ones site a hair lower. I also brake just enough as I down shift to slow and use less brakes.

6months??? WTF? you at the track every day mate?
You should expect approx. 5yrs or 80 000kms (what ever comes first) from a set of resonably good brake pads.

endless brake pads recommend u change them every 15000kms
sorry for hijacking the thread, but when i changed my brake pads i noticed there was more wear on the left pair, than the right. what does this indicate?

we live in australia.
and its a sharper angled turn when we turn left and while braking causes more wear to that side.
dont correct me if im incorrect:wave:

could mean tat one side of the car, the rotors more goneskies then the other, IE wear on the actual discs... all depends on wear by how much, or u installed them incorrectly if its like 5000kms and one side all gone and other side still full meat... i know from experience....
pads dont have a use by date, generally last 80 000kms if u drive real real slow, i change mine every 15 000kms or about 2 half times a year.

WOW. Thats alot of break pad changing... Do you buy particularly soft pads or what? Or some serious everyday heavy breaking?

the way that u measure ur pad is the thickness....try to compare it with the base of the pad.....if its thinner then the base then its time to change....if its thicker then the base then you are still fine.....I just know this from my mate working in brake plus.....hope this help bro...cheers...

yeah depends on the brand, i got cheap pads once before and they lasted 10,000kms, got some bendix advance ones and they're still fine after 75,000kms with no change in driving style
