How to tell when new ATF is needed?

What are the symptoms when it's time to change the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) in a car? Rough shifts? Clunking between gears perhaps?

useually symptoms mean it to late, damage is done

unless the fluid level is low, then the rpm will flair around corners.


change the ATF every 40 000kms.

or if it looks brownish or smells burnt.
