ok.... i've been looking at retrofitting HID's into a friends gen2 crx. obviously with the OEM headlights there would be heaps of glare is they are reflector units. i had a look at the projector headlights avaiable for the gen2 online/ebay and i'm not really sure how suitable they'd be for HID's

my main concerns are
- HEAT... the aftermarket projector units seem to be mainly made of plastic, i've heard of these melting in certain cases

- BULB SIZE... from what i've read the HID globes are longer than the oem globes so i'm not too sure on fitment?

other than that is there anything else i should be too concerned about?
from what i gather they're pretty easy to fit wiring wise

so all HID guru's out there fire away :)

okay, it just depends which head light you get.
i had angel eyes for my car with projectors, and put HID's in em, worked fine, but some i've seen, have damaged the head light
lol.
so ask the seller is it, HID safe.

bulb will most probably be a H3 bulb.
it should fit fine, i've done it a few times on aftermarket headlights with projectors before.

yeah i asked the seller and he didn't think it was suitable, thought it might melt. i try the others as they are a few different ones out there

From what i've read the cases which have the melting headlight housings was mostly due to either:

Low quality HID kits
Dodgy wiring

I've been under the impression that HID's actually produce less heat.

There is only one HID guru on OH....and that is saxman!

lol

no, well not that i'm aware of.

i've used the same kit in 2 different sets of head lights, 1 head light melted, mine didn't.

They may produce less heat, but the bulbs are larger so there is less clearance between the bulb and the lens

different aftermarket light kits offer different clearances too

Regardless of if they melt or not, H3 projectors should be avoided at all cost. An hid bulb uses a longitudally mounted arc chamber, where as an H3 filament is mounted laterally. Think of it like an S2000 engine versus a civic engine... one goes this way _ and one goes this way |

What happens here is that the projector can not focus the light at all. You get very poor output, lots of glare, etc.

Melting or not, stay away.

What you can do, however, is use the projector housing to retrofit in some small oem projectors. This will allow you to use an oem D2S bulb, which will be FAR better quality than any kit you can by, and will allow for a projector that actually works at what it's designed for. Absolutely no comparison, and it won't be that hard to do if you take your time.

so u mean say like modifying a spare set of oem headlights? cutting em open, fitting, aiming, resealing it all up and hoping it all worked ok?

sounds a lil scary lol

btw most HID kits come in a variety of globe sizes, not just h3. i'm pretty sure the original size is h4

it is quite scary, lol.
i'm still considering if i should DIY, or send it to saxman to do it for me
lol.

saxman is a life saver.. you know why ? because he is from the states ! i'd give you a rep point saxman, but you got too many already :P

and yes.. thats what is saxman means panda, cutting open a oem headlight and attaching a projector to it. you can look in honda-tech. just search "retrofit HID" from my understanding, the best to get would be 4300kelvin, gives out the most light output, and travels the furthest. HID's are still white. so it'll still look nice. :)

goodluck, and post some end results ! we all wanna do one, but just scared to do it first ahaha

there's no need to do it in the oem headlights... infact, because of the lens design and such, I'd suggest using the headlights you were discussing in this thread. All you're doing is replacing the projector assembly that's inside of the headlight.

This will give you much better results that doing it in the stock headlights(as the fluted lenses really defeat the purpose of putting projectors behind them) and will be a lot easier for you, as all the aesthetic trim work is done, you have a high beam solution, and there will already be some sort of mount for the projector in place.
