View Full Version : How long do Fuel Injectors last?

My fuel economy has been terrible lately with up to 100km's less per tank. Although my air filter does need replacing and I'll be getting a reusable item shortly I was wondering how long to fuel injectors last before they start effecting fuel economy greatly?
My Euro has 27500km's in the clock so didn't think they'd need replacing just yet.
Are those injector cleaners actually any good?

You could have a bad batch of fuel. you could also have a fault PCV system which means your getting too much oil in your combustion chamber which inhibits combustion.

fuel injectors aren't really consumables... they really shouldn't start to go bad unless your filter is having issues, etc...
to get back your milage, I'd look into replacing all the filters(air, fuel, oil), changing out the o2 sensor for a new one, replacin the pcv valve, etc... these are usually bigger culprits.

Change o2 sensor on a car with 27k kms?

more info is needed... what do you classify as 'terrible' fuel consumption and how are you measuring it?

agreed injectors wont need replacing and i STRONGLY doubt it'd be the o2 sensor.
injector cleaners can do some good but i'd get the car sussed out by your dealer as there is no point in getting an injector service if thats not where the problem lies.
your engine light hasnt been on at all recently?

I'm measuring it by the fact I used to get 530-550km's per tank consistantly. Always fill up to the top (never half fills). Now I'm getting 450-470km's per tank and slowly getting worse each tank. Tried various fuels from various stations and this has been going on for a few months. I go through a tank about every 1.5 weeks so I've had several tanks as a good test.
As I said earlier I'm getting a new air filter as the current filter is quite dirty so it could be only that.
Engine light hasn't been on at all.

while highly unlikely, it's MUCH more likely of the culprit than the fuel injectors... he could have got some bad gas that fouled the sensor, etc

Suspect O2 sensor too. But a failed O2 sensor won't throw any codes nor CEL. So good luck trying to pursuade the dealer to swap O2 sensors.

If the car is under warranty, take it back and let them sort it out.

I will when it's ready for it's 30K service. Until then hopefully the air filter fixes it (or improves it).
My previous car had a similiar issue and it was just the air filter needed cleaning/replacing so I'm hoping it's the same again.

How dirty is your filter? I had 28k on my original filter and fuel consumption did not change from when it had 10k.
If it is the O2 sensor, you want it changed ASAP as it will foul your cat and you'll need a new one.

1: Do as they say and change your filters and oil.
2: Pull the O2 sensor(s) and bench test them. That way you spend a few hours and might save hundreds of dollars.
3: Pull off the fuel rail and pull out the injectors. There should be a little filter on each one that slides out, this might need cleaning.
4: Run some "good" fuel injection cleaner thru a half full tank. This way it's a little more potent. Everyone should run the cleaner every oil change. It’s a $5USD expense at most and keeps the system happy.
Let me know if you need to know how to test or find anything.
Let us know how you go Billzor.

Thanks for the help.
I might pull my 30k service forward to get the other filters and oil changed.
How do I bench test the O2 sensor? Is it meant to have a certain resistance or something?

Here are a few links I found for Bosch style O2 sensors.
http://www.forparts.com/o-21.htm
You have the Zirconia type sensor:

I'll make a diagram from one of my manuals but it's about 15 pages so it'll take some time.
