Well i have about 15000 to 16000 to spend on a new car and i'm really keen on an EK coupe. But with the high price of the 99 00 vti-r and difficulty of finding a clean example, would the cheaper 96 97 98 vti model be the better buy. I plan on keeping the car for quite a while and modding it for (hopefully) track work.

If i did get the cheaper vti i would consider a b18c for more power and the car would be modded in other areas as well (brakes, coilovers, sways, braces, yadda yadda).

I guess what i'm asking is; is a swapped and modded vti as fast or faster then a lightly modded vti-r. Or is the vti-r much more then just a b16a engine and body coloured mouldings? And that the balance and all round performance instilled in the factory by honda engineers makes it impossible for a vti to keep up with it at the track, no matter how many mods?

Thanks guys.

stock for stock the VTIR would be the better perfomer in most scenario's, this is why the car was more expensive new, and is more expensive now

after that, if your intention is to modify, then the performance of each chosen base is dependant on the size of your wallet dude

if you want a swap anyway, then get the VTI and use the difference in purchase price towards a B18c or anothr engine swap.

Remember theres always someone ou there who will spend more money and may have a faster car than yours as a result.

having said that, plan, research ask questions then make your choice

good luck, EK coupes are HOT

get the VTIR coupe you wont regret it....

i have previously owned a VTIR coupe and have driven the vti coupe numerous times and it the VTIR coupe is definately quicker. Also not to mentioned the vtir coupe is facelifted.

theres a guy on the forums selln his one for about 12.5k!!

there a vtir on carsales for 17k black too...i would go vtir cause of the facelift (so much nicer) but if not get a cheap run down vti and do the engine swap..will probably cost abit more but still b faster then as slightly modded b16

my un-educated guesstimate
vti coupe - 11000
+ b18c2/7 swap 4500/6000
+ facelift 400
+ rearlift 250
total 16150/17650

vti-r coupe 17000

obviously still more stuff u need to zorst, intake, brakes etc etc

but yerr... u get my idea...(probably way off but yerr :) )

thats my 2000 dong

here's my version to answer ur question... firstly for performance, besides engine difference, stock VTIR also has rear disc brakes where as VTI has rear drums (maybe ABS too, sumone check). The usual cosmetic differences on the VTIR, 15" alloys, colour coding, facelift, can't remember much else.

If you were to swap a B18C into a VTI along with other mods, i can't c how a VTIR can keep up. There isn't much else different between the two cars... possibly a better suspension setup on the VTIR, but modifying the VTI will compensate for that. Being a higher capacity, more torquey and more powerful engine, the B18C will always be a better starting point over a B16A in terms of power. At the end of the day, imo with your kinda budget, you wont get much more out of a B16A VTIR compared to a B18C VTI.

Btw, preface lift owns
