i see this referred to alot when talking about coilovers and its usually extra, what does it do and does it have any practical affect on a CL7?

When the coil bottoms out it saves the suspensions' mounting components from fractures and serves as a soft option under full travel.

not sure what europro is talking about

these are pillow mounts

and they sit at the top of the suspension strut and connect to the chassis of the car, allowing one to dial in the camber of each of your wheels by changing the angle of your suspension strut.

here is set of what the tops of normal coilovers without the pillow mounts look like

note the lack of adjustability.

Do you need them or is it preferable to have them?

So they fix camber?

i think euro boy is talkn about helper springs maybe ?

i think the pillow uppermount also gives a bit more feedback i heard?

You need them if you want to be able to align your wheels like if you have too much camber. If you are not slamming your ride too much then they are nice to have.

On most hondas - these items do nothing ~ you cannot adjust camber angle via the shock (wishbone design) . It is altered by adjusting/altering the upper control arm.

i believe only cars like the s13/14 r32's can use pillow ball mounts...

most hondas if not all these are irrelevant like bennjamin said

Jees somtimes the lack of poor knowlede on here astounds me.
Pillow ball uppermounts are different to the stock upper mounts in that they replace the rubber bushing with a spherical metal joint.

The benifit of this is greatly increased road feel. However this is almost always accompanied by an increase in vibrations and unwanted noise, just like using spherical joints elsewhere in the suspension.

Also it helps keep alignment more true, which is more important to cars with strut type front suspension. To us honda drivers it would not make any real noticible reduction in alignment change.

They can be used on all cars not just strut type front suspension cars (s13/14 r32 wateva). Some types of pillow ball uppermounts alow camber or caster adjustments, however this only works on car with strut type front suspensions, somthing our hondas are not.

the only nocible difference using upper pillow ball mounts on a street car are move vibrations, more unplesent noises, they dont last forever - less than oem, usualy making worse noises as time goes on, as the joint wears. All for an increase in road feel/more sensitive. IMHO more of a mod for a track car than a road car, they wont make you any quicker unless ur driving at 99% on the edge.

ie. on a race track:thumbsup: , not the street:thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:

note the lack of adjustability.

Id say those are pillow ball mounts (they cirtainly look it), the lack of adjustability dosnt change that.

Both these photos show pillow ball mount coil overs. The top one is adjustable for McPherson strut suspension where it can adjust camber where as the lower ones are the type you will find on coil overs designed for Hondas.

I run pillow ball mounts as my coil overs came with them at no change but there is allot of vibration and road noise because of them. I would quite happy get rid of them as Muzz said there is only very slight performance increase and only when driving the car at 99%
