In you opinions, which brand of synthetic engine oil is the best?

I always used Pennzoil 5W-50W, but they don't make them anymore. The new one is 5-40W I think.

Out of Mobil, Pennzoil and Shell (I don't trust Valvoline cus John Laws endorses it) which one is the best?

Mine is a 03 :honda: Jazz GLI auto.

Castrol Edge 5w-30, energy efficent, thin oil. You'll get a lot less drag in your engine than 5w-50 oil and better fuel economy and better throttle response. Around $50 for 5L at supercheap auto, often less when they discount it.

I always thought of Castrol as being inferior quality compared to the other names like Mobil, Shell or Pennzoil. Am I wrong?

I was thinking of getting Shell Helix ultra for my next oil change. My car has never been on anything other than full synthetic Pennzoil.

Should I stick to the same thing or is there anything better?

Is it OK to change oil brands after being on a particular brand for so long (3 years).

Shell Helix ultra 5w-40 is a very good oil. Easy to get and not too ex.

Mobil1 or Motul seem to be top of the range. not sure about the other ones. Shell and Castrol seem to be pretty average.

Depends how often you change it really. Alot of people say that if you change your oil every 5000 k's it doesn't matter which brand you use, as long as its a fully synthetic and its the right weight then you'll be a happy camper.

If i was buyin oil like Mobile 1 or something elsee that is $100+ a bottle i'd be leavin it in there longer.

I'm just one of thsoe guys that like to have fresh oil all the time.

Its a well talked topic too so you might find some good info if ya search.

yeh true that. Use Honda FEO (~$30) and change it every 5000km. Or buy expensive full-synthetic and change it every 10,000km

I mean its not like its a ferrari or a turbo car, the jazz runs very well with Honda FEO

FEO is good enough. So even Castrol is better than enough for your Jazz.

Just out of interest, and while we're on this subject.

is honda FEO fully synthetic, semi-synthetic or what??

Never found a straight answer.

Australian FEO is mineral.

Japanese FEO comes in mineral, semi and full synthetic.

South East Asian FEO comes in mineral and semi.

I don't like Mobil1. I prefer Castrol 0w-40 over Mobil1 Gold. I prefer Motul 300V over all.

I picked up some castrol 0 - 40 to try out. i used Castrol 5 - 30 last time which went well. Tryin out the 0 - 40 for summer tho.

I coldn't be bothered changing every 5000km, I change mine every 10,000km (which generally equates to once every 10 months). So thats why I try to get the best possible oil.

I am very happy with pennzoil 5-50W; the car is very quiet, idels at 500rpm and on the motorway at 110-120km/h the revs are at 2400-2500rpm.

I only use the best available products on my car but now that Penzzoil stopped making 5-50W oil, I feel a bit lost. Is 40W enough for our summers, when the ambient temp is around 36-40C? Does anyone make 50W oil anymore?

40 w is enough. check on the back of the bottle. it should give you the operating temperatures for the oil. As well as in the owners manual.

Also, your oil has nothing to do with what RPM your car runs at. It may have a slight effect on your performance from a weight point of view but it is very minimal and shouldn't concern a daily driver or even an occasionaly racer.

I use castrol 5 - 30 in winter and will probably use castrol 0 - 40 in summer.

You don't want to use an oil that is too thick because it may not get into the clearances between the bearings etc. (this is very unlikely tho)

i dont have a honda but i use Castrol gtx3.
i change at like 5000-7000. whenever is convenient.

i reckon if u change at 5-7000kms just use Honda FEO.
of course if you use thineer you can extract abit more fuel econ and performance.:)

50 is too thick unless your manual specifies 10w-40 for your Jazz. Only go 1 step up.

i wouldnt put castrol in any car. Every car ive worked on thats had castrol in it, had thick sludgey crap inside the tappet cover.

What oil do you use? Because you have the same car as me- 03 Jazz GLI.

Depends on the oil. GTX3 sludges a bit. Edge/Formula R 5w-30 and 0w-40 hasn't sludged in the past 2 changes.

how do you check if it sludges.
the most ive left my gtx3 15w-40 (from memory) till is prolly near 7000km if even 6500rpm.

i usually get it when its on special for 23-24$ at supercheap for 5.5L

what other oil is good for that price range.
i dont leave my oil till 10 or 15000 so i dont think i need to spend $50 on a 5L

i use to use Shell Helix Plus Semi Sythetic (costs around the same as GTX3 or few $ more) alot then i swapped over to GTX3.

Take off the oil cap, use a flashlight and look inside. You might be able to see it.

The problem with GTX3 is that it doesn't last when used in vehicles with a 12 month service interval (Holdens). It should be alright in vehicles with a 6 month service interval.

I can agree that the castrol edge/sport works well and doesn't sludge.

Used it the passed two changes.

Do the people at Honda dealerships allow you to bring your own oil for servicing?

Yes at the dealer that I use. I have to tell them that I am bringing my own oil when I make the appointment.

truth is you will never know which brand is the best, theres no way of seeing the effects of "better" or more expensive motor oil compared to FEO or something similar on ur car...
the advertising market says Mobil1 is the best stuff, but just use FEO or Mobil S or something and change the oil more often it'll be fine :)

Thanks for all the comments guys.

mj3610, I don't have the time or patience to change my oil very regularly so I change it every 10000km. So if you were in my position, which oil would you use?

Yes there is, Synthetics withstand temperature better than mineral and loses less viscosity when compared to mineral. For 10,000km, I'd use a good semi synthetic or full synthetic. If you are changing only every 12 months, then full synthetic for sure. Even Castrol Edge 0w-40 will be good enough.

In my car, cheaper mineral oils like Magnatec were breaking down, causing my engine to run rougher at about 7000km.

if ur changing oil every 10kms then go for Mobil1 which is full synthetic and is around $60 for a bottle.
a cheaper alternative is castrol edge sport (full synthetic) which will be ok to change every 10kms and i think is around $50 a bottle (correct me if im wrong).
u can never go wrong with Mobil1, it lasts a good 10kms and better for ur engine.
all the best :)

As I always say, you want the best?

Look no further than Top Secret man... But you need to see if its suited to your application and justify the expensive cost haha

Mobil 1 huh? thanks mj3610  .

Dreadangel, what's so good about top secret? I never heard of it. How much is it and how many litres do I get? What is its viscosity?
