View Full Version : Fibreglass sub box for Euro
Hi all,
Just thought I'd post some pics of the fibreglass sub box im making for my 06 Euro at the mo :) Its going to house a 10 inch woofer and sit in the right hand rear corner. I was forced to make a fibreglass box because we need the boot space for the family and the Euro boot is so damn tight and fiddly.
Anyway here are some pics of the progress. I've glassed the front tonight so dont have pics of that yet, but I'll post some more once i get the chance. I'll be 2 pac'ing the box in the same colour as the car (Graphite), so looks like its sanding time for me :(.... still should be easier than carpeting with all the curves.

He means the jack and wheel nut spanner.Theyr'e under the sub box in your pics.
Ah thats an easy one... the box isnt fixed permanently. Because its such a snug fit.. a few large pieces of velcro on the back and bottom of the box will hold it solid. The speaker wire will have an external connector so it can be unplugged.

Nice fit. Hope you are going to sound deaden the side body panel behind the sub (and maybe the top of the boot lid), otherwise its gonna vibrate and resonate
Well I'll see how it goes... i'll be buying some dynamat for the front doors, so I should have some extra to use on the boot. This is only a single 10inch with 200w of power so isnt going to shake the car to pieces :)

ive got a 12 inch with about 1200w rms and it gets a bit of boot rattle but with 200w i think you should be fine!

It greatly depends on the tuning of the bass as well, for instance with my 600w sub, it causes quite alot of vibration especially in the parcel tray.
What I did was tuned the Amp to cut off the mid Bass so only very low bass frequency is outputted, and the vibration has gone.
The 6x9's (not the crap stock ones) fill in the mid bass and its all good now.

very clean job. I saw this kind of sub box in HK ages ago. Good to have some ppl DIY it with the skill.
Thanks for the feedback guys... I'm keen to see how it sounds once its finished. Like I said before its only a single 10 so I'm not expecting too much vibration but it should be enough to round out the system and match the mb quarts going into the doors :)
I am a little sceptical on whether the fibreglass works as well as mdf, but I've used about 4 layers of 400gm matt, so it gives about 5-6mm of thickness to the entire box and there's 25mm dowel in various places as bracing... so this thing is going to be fairly solid I think :)

Ahh cool thanks Euro69.. I've been wanting to see another Euro with a fibreglass sub box :) So did you make it yourself... and what is it covered in ? It looks like paint because you can still see the fibreglass underneath..
Also how does it sound ?

yeah it was maded by me. i just spray black paint over it for the time being. haven't decided if i want to carpet it or get it painted.
to me the glass box sounds pretty good. i had to put alot of that cotton wool thing inside it. when it didnt have any it sounded different.
Ahh ok cool. Yeah I generally put a whole bunch of the dacron wadding in sealed boxes anyway but will try it with and without to see if it makes any difference.
I reckon you should get it painted up.. I'm lucky that my dad works with fibreglass/carbon and also paints in 2 pac a lot so I'll be aiming for a high gloss smooth finish with his help and will cost me $0. :)
It's interesting that you made the box go as far forward as you could to fill in the gap.. must be pretty thin by the end of it.

JL.... lovely.... I was thinking of maybe getting a 12W7 or maybe 12W6v2. How much cu^3 ft you got with the fiber enclosure???

Hey, pretty good for DIY! well done
Yeah it is a good job... seems I have some competition now for 'best DIY custom sub box' :) I've finished the glassing and now just need to sand and sand and sand and sand... hahah. As far as space goes.. I'm not 100% sure yet but I'd say mine will be around the 0.9cu ft mark at most. I'm lucky in that my 10 only needs 0.3 to 0.7 to work in. But its far better to have a bit more space than not enough, you can always pack the inside of the box to reduce the space but if you make it too small then you're stuffed.
I think you'd have trouble fitting a power hungry 12inch sub in this position given the extra box space you'd need.

Hmm $5000 bucks later :p
Hahah and where exactly do I fit the pram ? :D
A few years back something like this would have been the ticket, but alas space and budget restrictions mean a more basic DIY job.

how did you mould the shape of the corner in the boot? care to do a DIY write up?
I've been taking pics along the way during the build of my box, so I'm more than willing to do a write up once its finished. Anyone can do it... just need some basic tools and a lot of planning. I'd say it would cost about $120 all up... maybe less if you have some of the stuff already. A shop would charge $600+ for a fibreglass box because of the time involved.
Hmm $5000 bucks later :pIt wasn't expensive at all considering the material & the result but it took almost 6 months to it because of the fibreglass & custom paint + the person is very busy as well.
Look great, but how do you pack for a weekend away ? LOL

I gave my previous 12" JL 1.2cu^ft, then stuff it full with accoustic sponge. Sounds sweet.... but not meant for SPL.

I think he's gonna sell his car at the end of the year or early next year so maybe he's gonna sell the audio system separate from the car.

I got mine through Fhrx, good price to, was on sale a while back though dont believe it still is
Well I made a bit of a start on the finishing steps for the box. Here are a few pics of the newly glassed front. I havent sanded yet so there are a few bumps here and there, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
I've got lots of sanding and a bit of bogging to get it to the stage I'll be happy to 2pac it. I'm thinking either the same colour as the car (Graphite) or straight Black... any thoughts?
By the way, there is a grill that slots in to the front of the speaker which is why there is an extra mdf ring in the opening.. its an mdf ring with routered front edge where I've flush mounted a steel mesh grill... it will be covered in speaker cloth.

Looks nice :) either black or graphite would work i think, where are you putting your amps?
Also, how long did this take you from start to finish ?
Its giving me ideas :)
The amps will be mounted on a board against the back seat, but only on the left hand side so i can still fold the seats forward independently. It will be a an upside down V shape ie. mdf board up aginst the back seat... then angle spacers so that another mdf board comes down flat and the amps are mounted on that. This means the wiring will be hidden in the gap created by the spacers and u wont see it ... ill send pics once I get it together... I've cut all the pieces already.
The EQ will be mounted on mdf with a fibrglass housing to hide all the wiring... it will fit up under the parcel shelf and be on a bracket so the front of it can drop down to show the eq and to make adjustments... then it tucks back up again when u dont need it ... :) I'm making all the housing myself and then taking it to a good car audio shop near me to do all the wiring and connecting.
As for how long the box took me .... umm maybe 2 days all up. But id do it a lot faster if I had to do it again .... lots of trial and error :D

Might be a silly idea for the Euro, but has anyone thought of making a sub box to fit inside the spare wheel? I know the Mazda6 Luxury Sport has a ported Bose sub unit, neatly fit into the full sized spare. It's only small, but for those who have to fit port-a-cots/ prams and all that other stuff in their boots (like us), space is precious! I don't know what the bose units are worth, but I'm guessing they're not cheap!!!
Surely a cylindrical type box wouln't be too hard to make, and it could be ugly cause it's not seen, just not too sure if you would get the required cubic feet of space for a 10" sub??? Maybe an 8"
Just a thought...
BTW, nice work Kiwi!
Hmmm could be an idea, but I think you'd struggle to get anything decent in the tyre well with the tyre still there. I mean it would be cheaper and easier to buy one of those 8 inch bass tubes if thats the way you were going to go.
I think the fibreglass 10 in the corner is the only way to go to keep as much space as possible and still get a decent bass hit.
BTW. My dad's freed up some time next week to 2pac all my install builds so I'll have to pull my finger out and get it finished this weekend. I've decided to go for straight gloss black for the sub box and mounts etc. Sandpaper here I come :(

I've seen people put the sub in the spare wheel well in euro, of course the spare wheel is taken out! You'll just have to bring a can of tyre sealant foam just in case :D
Hahah if you cant afford to use much space because of kiddies then I doubt you can afford to lose the spare tyre :)
I wouldnt trust a can of foam getting my family out of strife on the side of the road. Mind you at least they can listen to some nice tunes while they wait for me to pick them up hahah

I've heard run flats are hard riding and $$$$.
Well I've finished all my sanding and made up the speaker grill (need to cover it with speaker cloth). Decided not to bog and sand the back of the box like I planned. No ones going to ever see it anyway, but I was trying to do a 100% job, but have since changed my mind because I've got better things to do :)
I've also made up a frame for my EQ that will sit up under the parcel shelf on a hinge so that it can swing down when you want to make adjustments to show off, and then fold it back up again and out of the way the rest of the time.
Will have them painted in black 2 pac by the end of the week and then off to the Audio shop to install it all :)

Its some form of sound deading stuffs.... I have few prefer material myself Dynamat Extreme, Dynamat Extremliner, Cascade Quitekote, Cascade deflex pads and Brax Sounddeadener. The last 2 items are acctually meant for something else though...
2 pack is paint, not sound deadening.
It just a paint made up from 2 different packs (hence the name). Gives a much better/stronger finish than regular spraying. I'm getting these painted by my old man in a dark grey over the next few days. I'll post pics of them once I get them back. :)

Well I've finished painting the fibreglass I've been doing. I'm not 100% happy with the colour (I've got an 06 in Graphite so wanted something close to that) but it will do for now. The paint quailty is certainly better than using spray cans :)
The pics here are pretty crap but I'll get some better ones once its in the car tomorrow.

Nice!
Where will the amps be attached to?
The amps will be attached to the back of the left rear seat, so that both seats can still be folded forward independently. I've got a board that gets bolted to the back seat then a few angled spacers and then the painted board in the pic gets screwed to that so that the amps are mounted flat. This also means that I'll be able to feed all the cables inside the gap made by the spacers so you wont see any wiring at all, except for the power wires going into and out of the distribution block :)
I've got a flush mounted speaker grill that will fit into the sub box as well.. just need to get some spray adhesive for the grill cloth to finish that off.
Thanks for the feedback, not bad for my first DIY I guess.

U should attach amps etc.under the parcel shelf, then u can put back seats down no problems.:)
a) the amps are too big to go under the parcel shelf and
b) the eq will be housed under the parcel shelf on a hinge so the front edge can drop down to make adjustments :)

LOL, sounds like you know what you are doing (of course, otherwise you won't do it DIY).
Sometimes mounting the amps under the parcel shelf (for some model, not all) could lead to amps overheating because the heat cannot escape properly.
Exactly.. and if you notice on my old Lanzar amps the heat fins are all on the top so placing it hard up against the parcel shelf would be a bad move. Especially since I'm bridging the 2x25w amp at 2ohms to run the Sub :)
The EQ wont have such problems so it was the way to go, plus this way you get to see all the gear :)
