Car: 99 EK Civic Cxi
Transmission: Manual
Engine: Stock

Problem: When I try to accelerate at high revs (floor the gas pedal) it sputters. Normal driving is ok, as long as i am gentle enough on the pedal.

Can anyone shed light into this? All feedback is appreciated

Cheers

K's ? same in any gear ?
Dizzy timing might be out or clutch might be slipping
, or spark plug/leads might be iffy

Km's: 136xxx
Same in every gear

Is there anyway I can accurately tell if the clutch is slipping? had my car serviced about 2 months ago and 'apparently' clutch is ok.

yeah thought it could be the plugs and leads.
Thanks for the input guys. I'll get all those things checked out

Peace

Check for water in the spark plug holes, water can cause shorting at high revs, resulting in stuttering. If there is no water, replace the spark plugs.

i witnessed the way the car was sputtering this morning

Even with more than half throttle application on takeoff the car felt and sounded as if it was running on 3 cylinders. Its an even money bet that fuel is not the issue here.

I know the plugs havent been changed on the car in a while, so obviously this is the first thing to try, (Alex sorry i didnt have the right spark plug sockets to fit down into the head). This MAY well solve the problem as there might be one fouled plug. BUT, would the car run normally on light throttle application if this were the issue?

Maybe its the leads? but once again wouldnt the problem be consistent if this was the case?

I have a feeling its either a coil pack, or dizzy issue. Either way get it checked bro, shame you cant come to wakey on Monday as a result. Dont worry you can watch me all day!!

if the sparkie are dead. u would feel the difference example loss of power. even at idle it will sputter

you have a problem with your leads

you can probably do a ghetto fix by wrapping the neck of the lead with insulation tape to stop the spark jumping from the neck the the wall of the head.

insulation tape as in electricate tape?

is your air filter dirty?

Air filter is clean.

We shall try the electrical tape thing. Sounds like a quick fix for now

Thanks everyone

check the throttle body is not clogged & the pendulm actually opens & closes.
Check the ICV (check the DIY how to clean it)
Also have you changed the fuel filter lately? Clogged filters make the car die at high load.
Change the plugs (even new plugs can dies prematurely) worth the $12 trouble.

Tried the electrical tape thing as a quick fix. Didn't work.

Zilli and I cleaned the throttle body on Sat, works fine.

Will try to change the fuel filter and plugs also.

Thanks for the advice Limbo.

saying to wrap the entire socket of the lead and up onto the actual cord, or just where the cord meets and socket part of the lead?

U may wanna buy a $10 multimeter from dicksmith or jaycar and test the resistance of the spark leads, before buying new ones

you wrap up from the bit that touches the plug, leaving the hole to be able to plug it in, till under the bit that sits on the rocer cover

I go about 12 times, no to fat though as you want to be able to still fit it in.

good luck

is there a better way than electrical tape?

Yep, get new leads.

Using insulation tape is a sure way (easy/cheap) to find out if the old leads are the problem.

Yer man, y don't you just buy new leads and sparkies. Freshen her up a bit.

Picked up new sparkies yesterday, So i'll be changing those.

Thanks for the detailed description ECU-MAN. I'll take your advice to see if the leads are the problem.

If the leads are the problem i'll look into OEM Honda Leads. I know they're expensive so i'll have to ask around to get the best price.

Just worried that the electrical tape will melt or something. Is it safe to leave there for a short time?

Problem now fixed.

It was just the spark plugs. Didn't cost too much to fix.
