View Full Version : Ticking sound. WTF?

I've just recently noticed a ticking sound comming from the front of my car when I'm driving. I can't hear it until I hit about 60kph and the speed of the ticking increases with the speed of the car. Cornering doesnt change anything and neither does using different gears or nuetral. Basically if the car's doing over 60 I can hear it.
Just wondering if anyone has an idea what this could be?
Cheers

i had a similar problem or maybe the same problem a long time ago...it is noticeable if ur driving near a wall in a motorway or a car.
After 1-2 months the 'ticking' noise went away! i dunno how & why lol!
Take it 2 ur mech. & get him to check ur front cv boots, cv joints

Ticking noise regardless of cornering?!
Sounds like the inner CV joints (the ones that go into the gearbox).

ive been having a similar problem, and from what ive read and from people that ive spoken to; its most likely the tappets?

Probably just your engine tappets.
i get this same sound but mine is all the time even at idle how important is tappet adjustment?
EuroDude

Its not the Tappets since the noise doesn't start until 60km/h.
Tappet adjustments are important for fuel economy and performance, and should be done every 40000/50000km

you could have a crack in your header and the ticking sound could be the exhaust leaking. can you hear it when revving at idle?is the ticking consistant with the revs?

try tighten all nuts and bolts.. maybe as simple as your rim not lock properly and it's knocking the hub as you drive..

yeah true, i'll go over everything this weekend. i say this weekend because now it's stopped. lol! i heard a clunk and thought a rock had been thrown up under the car. soon after a realised the ticking was gone... hopefully whatever it was hasnt worn out completely and broken ;)

spot on... which means it's also not an exhaust leak. engine rpm didnt affect it, neither did cornering. might get inner cv's checked for the hell of it. thanks guys

have a quick check over your tyres. There could be comethin wedged in there. i've had this happen a few times.
Other then that there could be something caught up around your discs or something.
Next step would be the inner CV joints.
What does it sound like?/ is it a metal on metal sound?? or just a soft ticking?? I could imagine inner CV's bein a loud metal on metal sound. Louder then tappets.

it was kinda the ticking u'd hear from tappets or a stone in the tyres. i pulled both front wheels and inspected wheels, tyres, discs, shafts etc. if it moved and was between the gearbox and the road I insoected it!! but damed if i could notice anything.
i'm thinking it was either cv's, a bearing or something in the clutch or g/box

man.....I'm having EXACTLY the same problem as you kraiye...
Just happened today when I drove the Eastern Freeway, it was damn loud when cars go past me.
I checked the tyres and seems to be OK. The Car is lowered but not slammed.
I'm now trying to drive below 60km/h for safety sake and give it a good check up on the weekend. I just hope it's nothing serious.
So did you found out what exactly was the Problem???
P.S - I also drive an EK1, must be a common problem....

dam man thats freaky!
just giv it a week or so, wait for the *CLUNK* then everything will be back to normal ;)
i did notice my drive shafts did have a TINY bit of play but dunno if that had anything to do with it cause the play is still there but the noise is gone.
let us know if it doesnt go away and if u find out what it is. am very interested!

I think the drive shafts have a bit of play in the anyways. So that when your engine moves around in the bay they don't snap or break the hub or anythin.

Quick Question...
Is it possible to have a faulty shaft when your Boots are in perfect order?
Cos' all four (inner & outer) boots seems fine on my car....yet the ticking just keeps on going....Weird
I'm now thinking of replacing the complete Axle, since it's been over 2/3 yrs now since my CV's have been replaced.

OMFG, this is Freaky to the MAX...
I was driving late at night to my gf's, crusing on the highway at a steady 70km/h when all of a sudden a *CLUNK*, yes a *CLUNK* sound exactly what kraiye had decribed. At 1st I thought something fell from the engine, but there was nothing on the ground. It was a scaring sound and sounded as though you drove over a BIG rock!
Afterwards, the clicking sound from the wheel area was all but Gone! So freakin Weird! Does anyone know what happened???
And to think I was to change my driveshaft tomorrow....

lol@clunk
If you jack up the car, the Springs will shift out of place, and may not get back into its correct position until you are driving (especially with older cars).
Happened with my Civic all the time after changing the brake pads. Half an hour later I would be driving at 70km/h and suddenly hear this Bang! lol
Guess you can avoid it by spraying grease around where the springs sit

So does that mean it's the Spring that's making those clicking noise???

I doubt it. I was just referring to the 'clunk' noise.
If its not the CV joints, maybe the ticking noise is caused by faulty Wheel Bearings?

i had a clicking noise coming from my car, got my cvs changed then realised it was a wheel bearing!! check the casing on your bearings cos i just got used to it and turned the stereo up louder, turned out the front left was f#*$d
