hey guys,
i recently got new wheels 17" and the tyres 215/40ZR 17 87W toyo proxes 4. they scrape along the guard when cornering. i see that pretty much everyone who has 17"has gone with 205 and not 215. Would going with 205 for mine have stopped the scrapping? the suspension/springs are fairly soft. does the 205 make the wheel just a touch thinner? i already have them now, can i change them? trade them in? because the guy suggested that size for them so.....let me know what you guys think.

yeah 215's are 10mm wider than 205's.
hmm. its difficult... i have the same issue, I was suggested 215's also, but they scrape on the rear.
Either you can try to sell the tyres, but you'll make a big loss.
You can get your guards rolled.
Maybe you can talk to your guy that suggested them to you, but I doubt he will help you much. Once a sale is made, unless the product is faulty, it's kinda your problem ... Which is shit considering he gave you bad advice.

I don't think it would necessarily have stopped the scrapping. as the 215s are a bit wider, but your profile is still 40 though, so the height would be the same.
I'd say look into getting you guards rolled a bit. I doubt you can trade them in, as they have technically been used.
I stuck with 205 to keep my aspect ratio as close as possible to stock, so the speed I was doing would match the speed on the speedo.

My suspension guys recommended I get 215s because it was a 7" wide rim. The 215 gives the rim slight protection from guttering. I was told by people on here to run 205s because of scraping issues (mainly in front end when turning). The smaller tires will tuck inside the guards better and won’t be as close to the inner guards. However this may still not fix your problem depending on offset, how low you are and other issues.
I would increase your spring rates and have your Konis serviced (rebuilt) and if doesn’t fix the issue I would rase the car and wait until the current tires were worn out and get 205s next time.
