Fanbelt Ticking noise when car is idle

Hey guys i have an ej8.

I noticed the other day when my stereo wasnt going that when my car is idle there is a constant ticking noise.

It sounds like it is in time with maybe the fan belt. as the belt goes around something touches something else.

My friend said it could be my distributor cap or something??

Can some one help please!

The car has just been services (about 3000K's ago) but im pretty sure this noise has been with the car since i got it..

The noise isnt out of rhythm, there is like a split second between each 'tick' noise.

No its not that i dont think...

i had that problem in my other car and when i started off in first and didnt have enough revs then my car would make a funny tapping noise.

well is your revs okay?

yeah revs are fine, the ticking becomes quicker when i put revs on..

double check your oil as well, even though it's been 3000kms. just to make sure.

How many kms has the car done?

I would adjust the tappets and change the oil.
You can take off the dizzy cap and have a look at it, wipe of the white powder from the contacts. If it looks worn too much, replace it with a new one (they are cheap).


But honda engines normally tick at idle anyway, so its probably just the fuel injectors doing their thing.

Does the sound go up with engine speed or vehicle speed?

If it goes up with engine speed it's likely to be your tappets.

If it goes up with vehicle speed it could be something to do with your wheels/brakes.

i cant hear the tapping when i start to get over speeds of 20-30km because of my exhaust but hopefully its just my engine:)

I will have a look at those things and get back to you guys!

try opening ur bonnet at idle and try and hear where the sound is comin from...wen does it happen cold or hot?

My Civics engine was making a strange ticking noise at idle, and it wasnt the tappets or injectors. Sounded like it was coming from the lower engine area (not gearbox though).

Are there bearing around the crank and camshaft? Maybe that the noise... worn bearings.
