Last week my mums Mazda 3 went in for service, and i got them to check an increase in road noise and tyre "whir" that i had detected.

They came back saying that the rear tyres were scallopped

what does this mean?

anyone know?

Dunno what that means, maybe they were over/under inflated and therew as abnormal wear on them??

"Scalloped tyres" are bumps or dips in the tread. Its uneven wear 'around' the tyre tread. In patches.
That can be caused by faulty shocks or miss-ballanced wheels/tyres. So the force is focused on a cirtain point(s) on the tyre as it rotates.

hmmmm

so you think a balance and continued driving will fix the problem?

im thinking of getting them balanced and swapping them to the front... they will get more wear on the front i suppose...

the cars only got 20kkms on it... cant see the shocks being off.... unless its faulty

I would speak to the Mechanic to confirm what he thinks the cause of the problem is. If he was decent he would have provided a opinion on how to fix it. If he can't don't go back.

If so, get a suspension place to check it out and/or get the wheels ballanced.

yeh once they are scalloped they will continue to wear the same way so the only way to correct the problem is to change the tyres.

run ur hand over the tyre tread and u will b able to feel the lumpyness...could be cause by alot of things..bumpy roads and unbalanced tyres

this happens when you leave tyres on the back wheels for too long with out rotating them..
will happen to any FWD car regardless of alighnment and balance or road condition.

recommended min rotation every 10 000kms

5000 kms if you can
