View Full Version : Full tank = 300km

My car has been running about 300km's a full tank recently.
Now I'm going to get my car serviced next week, most probably at Hannay's.
Wondering if the fuel filter being changed during the service will solve the problem?
What should also be done during the service that may help this problem?

It should be just under halfway :)
I was getting about 320km per tank when my thermostat died...

Is the temperature needle closer to the middle or closer to cold? A faulty temperature sensor could be telling the ECU that the engine was cold all the time and the engine would run rich to warm up the engine constantly.

Temperature looks fine to me.
It's closer to the middle.

350 from a tank? I assume 50litre tank? Wow thats bad right? I get around 500 atleast... but im not vtec so i pay the price :( haha
But yes, air filter if in bad shape can improve your consumtion, not sure to what extent though..

Clean air, replace fuel filter, replace oil filter, replace plugs and replace plugs. OEM for all of them except Air Filter. Then see how you go.
All simple jobs.

Very strong smell of some sort of petrol/oil from the exhaust while warming up.

Could be running too rich (If your smelling fuel), due to faulty sensors?

take it in for service see how it goes after that. if its no fixed after that look into it more seriously. only start to worry after service if its not going good. how long since your last service? what fuel are you using?

Only just bought the car.
Owned it for just less than a month. And is up for a service.
Been using V-Power.
Will be heading to Hannay's tomorrow.
update please kazaf :D
having the same prob so update would be much appreciated. Did you find the cause? Is everything ok now?

Do you have any mods?
I used to get about 350 kms a full tank.
Thats when i had a CAI set up. I put back the stock filter and im now constantly getting 400kms+ with the occasional vtec.
I also have headers and exhaust done.
yep its modded. xtractors, buddlyclub 2 muffler (was done when i bought car), and trust air filter. thats about it i think. i tried resetting ecu but still get same km a tank.

I just got my car serviced last week and had my fuel filter changed.
I only just filled a full tank yesterday so still waiting to see how it goes, so far so good. Though will wait till end of the week to see how the full tank lasts.

I filled up tonight, and the full tank made just about 400km's and I would reckon about 20 - 30 km's left if I hadnt refilled tonight.

No, it is not all right. Top it up with premium 98 so that it balances out to 95. so 1/2 a tank of regulat + 1/2 a tank of 98 octane.

Umm what was changed in the service?, was it only the fuel filter that was effecting the fuel consumption?
Did u drive like u normally would on that tank right after your service?

... didn't know the 1.8 b18 would get so low in fuel economy. Mine averages out 450km minimum with fangage everyday, try switch your fuel to maybe a higher octane for about 2 tanks and see how that works, can't think of anything else if you've already carried out a major service and still getting that low.

check O2 sensor , clean / replace oil , oil filter , spark plugs , air filter , fuel filter and most important AIR PRESSURE IN TYRES. All these factors can have an effect on fuel economy.

Man everyone is like "i only get 400 kays with minimal vtec" I vtec a bit in my dc5r and i get minimum 450 kays. the lowest ive gotten is 400 and thats coz i was racing a lot. Could it be because my type R is stock? im not sure, not everyone has theirs modified. in regards to shifting over 4k rpm. i do that regularly lol the damn thing revs too quickly and the gear ratios are so short! I would say the types of roads i go on in comparison to u guys is probably the key, my average speed is probably 75 kays and im rarely in stop-start situations.

man i go out with my car and it always get a spanking. i never get anything less then 400 k's a tank.
Last cruise we went out to the hills and there was a descnet amount of throttle usage and i did 250 k's in the first half of the tank easily.
Somethin must be up with your cars guys.

I think it also depends on your fuel tank capacity, ie 40, 50, 60L. Newer cars tends to have larger capacity.
EDIT: I have a 50L tank and I consistently get 460-480km of city/suburban driving.
JasonGilholme

check your tyres guys that they are running good PSI. (even slightly)Deflated tyres will drag and suck your fuel economy down.

well when i get to 4000 rpm its not granny sunday driving... Also, its both throttle position and rpm but yes, throttle position in this case could amount to more petrol consumption. Fact of the matter is if im flooring it to 4000 rpm in my type R each gear then well i dun think throttle position has much to do with it... i still get good economy! I do like to feel the 8000 rpm feel as well.. i dont like to go driving without vtec'in hard a few times. On ramps are lots of fun :)

Well when i get my petrol light on i drive and fill up and i usually have around 5-7 litres left in the 50lt tank of the dc5r. At this point i usually have around 480-550 kays on the dial depending on how much i have pushed it in the past week.

I'm the same. ALways get between 450 - 500k without the light coming on. Max litres ever was 37 with the first flick of the fuel light.
I think it does come down to tuning. A few people have stock cars and are getting good fuel economy. It seems that most people are modifying their engines with I,H,E and maybe not retuning for the mods. I had the mods and didn't do the ECU and found that my fuel economy wasn't too good (350-400k). I got the ECU done and tuned and hey presto, my fuel economy came back.
Another example, my fathers civic GLi only ever gets 380-450k to a tank. mods are intake and exhaust. When stock, it got over 500 all the time. ECU hasn't been done.
I know, they aren't Integras, but you guys should be getting good fuel economy too.
Just something else to ponder about.

so do u reckon i shud get the ECU?

as someone else said, mods change ur fuel consumption. My car is completely stock so the original fuel consumption is still there. If you have mods, it would be wise to get ur ecu tuned.

well air intake can make ur engine run rich u should see if u could get your ecu tuned. You can tune the stock ecu just need an auto electrician (i believe) to have a look at it. Your car is not stock so the petrol consumption is most likely a result from engine tuning. You will probably get better performance as well after the tune.

Depends on the ECU type. Australian models came out with 2 different types. 1 can be modified, the other can't. Hondata do an ECU called KPro for the DC5R integras. More info should be available if you search for KPro.

Just tried a tank of vortex 98. Good milage for the driving i did (470kms) considering i used vtec quite a bit. I am gettin to the impressiong that BP ultimate and Mobile 8000 are best for me.

I bought my DC2R with 40,000kms on it and it now has nearly 74,000kms and the fuel consumption has been consistently the same.
Should I really be getting more then around 350kms from a full tank without running it down to the orange fuel light?

change all filers (air oil fuel), clean out throttle body, get injectors serviced or throw a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank, change oil and check fuel press reg (prob not necessary) & DONT VTEC 2 MUCH!!
i get bout 300-350kms off my dc2, but running higher fuel press and advanced timing and vtec alot

You're obviously unaware of victorian anti "hoon" laws where police can impound your car if caught speeding over 45 kays or 155 in a 110 zone, driving in a "hoon" like manner such as burnouts, drifting etc...
I get 450 minimum out of the tank of my type R and i could not count the amount of falcodores that pull up next to me at lights for a bit of spirited driving.
I dont drive like a pussy and i also transport my gf around a lot and i wont put her life at risk by driving like a mental. I am confident in how i drive, i like twisties and such but i wont put others close to me at a higher risk (doesnt mean i drive like a grandma either, vtec only to 3rd gear lol). People talk about higher fuel consumption after installing gruppeM on the dc5's in the other thread. I rev out to 4k all the time and still get good economy.
My recommendation stands at getting your car tuned to run the modifications you have on them. A 4 cyl car should not get less than 350 kays in a 45-50L tank, just doesnt fit for me.

get your injectors cleaned under ultrasonic. but if you have a 2 1/2 inch exhaust then it is too big anyways, reduce it to 2 to 2 1/4 inch and you will get more economy and performance.
yer they are the main things to look for, if your exhaust is to big for your engine, your car is tuned in a way that more fuel is being pumped into the engine, or you race someone at the lights all the time.
i know in my teg i get max probably about 420kms out of one petrol tank, but its cause i do hit vtec quite alot. hehehe

Well My car is new and I put nothing but BP Ultimate in it. So i have gone 100k on the fuel light which was impressive. I have 2 trip meters and I reset the B one when the fuel lights hit
well normally people say that you shouldnt let your tank drop below the quarter mark, but i normally fill her up when the light comes on. :D

well im going to WSID tonight and I got ULTIMATE in it <1/4 tank, lets see what my baby has. I think that if the the car is tuned to RON95 it won't really do much.

^ yep! it probly wont make a diffrence. high octane fuel wont add any kw.
I know if a car is tuned for 98 it will run like crap without it

There should be a attachment that you can put at the end of the bowser that filter water and stuff from the fuel and counts the amount of ml that goes in to your car. Someone should invent this if its not aleady

ive done some testing on my car, i get 360kms if i drive like a wanker.. about 450 if i drive normally..
using the 98 octane of course. dc5 should get u to about 380ish in average?

I get about 10000km on a full tank on my dc2r, i stick cardboard wings on the side and when i vtec, i go airborn and fly to my destination.
:)
anyhow, back to the question, clean your air filter with some stuff that u can buy from autobarn, replace thermostat and spark plugs.

jz to confirm does the dc5r has a bigger tank than the dc2r?
DC2R is also 50L.
I normally get 7.5L/100kms
And I VTEC every time I get into my car.

Maybe 40L /w 6L reserve
there should be a threa don this already.. if you're not getting the correct fuel comsumption you believe you should be getting, then look under technical>FAQ
herse a quick comparison that you mgiht be able to compare with your cars..
my old ek4. ran 40psi and vtec'd a few times. got 610kms from a 45Litre tank. filled up at a servo and i fillde 44.3Litres (only had 0.7L in the tank)
~usually get about 500kms from my ek4
my current EK1. D16Y motor. 45Litre tank. get 550kms. increase your tyre pressure to about 40psi and it'll be able to get 600.
eDIT: i cant give you the URL .. its f'd at work. but here it is. copy and pasted word for word from what mr. wyn has written lol
How do I workout my fuel economy / usage
Now a lot of people just go on the number of KMs they get per 'full tank' however this can vary depending on how much you fill up and how much you have left in the tank.
I use the following method to work out the fuel usage (Litres) per 100KMs (a more accurate and comparable figure due to variations in fuel tank sizes).
Steps for calculation fuel economy
1) When you fill up your tank, fill up all the way to the top.
2) Zero your trip meter and drive around as per normal
3) Once you've used up fuel (say half a tank or more) fill up again all the way to the top of the tank
4) Note how much fuel you put in this time and also how many KMs you've done.
5) Use this formula to workout your fuel consumption.
Fuel Economy (L/100KMs) = 100*(Fill up amount (L) / Distance travelled (KMs)
Example
So say you did 420KMs on 35L of fuel:
FE = 100*(35/420) = 8.01L/100Kms
What should my fuel economy be like?
Now this varies depending on your car, the condition of the engine and also the model of car you have. Look in your car manual for a rough figure (but note that these figures are usually quite optimistic).
In my 1993 Civic Si 1.6L DOHC non-VTEC car I get around 8-9L/100KMs depending on the way it is driven.
What could cause me to use more fuel than normal?
There are quite a few factors that affect fuel economy and this thread hopes to point out what things you can look at (starting from the cheapest things to inspect / change).
Tyre pressues
Having low tyres pressure creates more resistance and cause the engine to work harder. Check your tyre pressures and try running a slightly higher tyre pressure (check your owners manual or tyre packard inside the drivers door) for the correct tyre pressue.
Air filter
If you haven't checked/changed your air filter lately, take it out give it a clean and if its still OK put it back in. If however it needs replacing try replacing it.
ECU Reset
If your car has been recently serviced and is still using too much fuel, you could try reseting your ECU. Just pull out the ECU fuse for about 5 mins (or disconnect the negative terminal of your battery). When you start the car up, just let it idle for a few mins before driving off.
02 Sensor
The 02 sensor only really comes into play under closed loop conditions (ie free way driving or at idle). If your ECU is throwing a 02 sensor error code or the 02 sensor itself is faulty (you can check the voltage it should be sending to the ECU with a multimeter, depending on the AF ratio). If you know somoeone with the same car try borrowing their 02 sensor.
