Hi peeps,

I got a little problem. I occasionally get an odd knocking noise from the Front right wheel. Its a deep "whump whump whump" noise thats dependant on speed(Faster i go, faster it whumps). Now, here the odd bit, it happens when i turn left and will stay even when straight, until i turn right, they will go away, and will stay quiet when straight, until i apply "left" pressure again.
I hope that makes sence.

i belive it not to be the CV as at slow full lock turns, there no clicking, and the boots are intact.

wheel bearing.

it doesnt make the noise when you turn the other way because there's no downforce on it ..

it should be making more of a grinding whirring noise rather than a whump whump noise though

yup, definately sounds like a wheel bearing.

I've actually had the "whump whump" noise and the whirring.

This sounds familiar. I can hear the "whirring" coming from the passenger side when I'm turning right. I'm getting laggy feedback from my power steering (or at least that's what I've decided it is for now) which feels like strange body roll. Could all this be a wheel bearing???

thats why i presumed it was a bearing, ill put a sound clip up later.

Would n e thing bad happen if i dont replace it right away (after xmass when im done with ppls presents) ? Are they hard to replace??

front?
you'd have to get a press.
to press the bearing out.
unless you get a hub and bearing assy, not sure if they do that for the front though, i know they do it for the rears.

I dont think it is, due to the whole coming and going depending on which side pressure is applied from.

How much are bearing? Ive been told to get them from a bearing shop, not honda. What would labour be like? 1 hour?? for a pro?

Its better to get them at honda because you wont find the bearings that are exactly the same as the honda ones. They arnt cheap though.

Actually there are companies that make OEM replacement wheel bearings. I have an OEM replacement in my car and it works great. Since its the front wheel, you will have to remove the front knuckle/arm assembly as its 1 piece. Then you bring that to your mechanic of choice and have them press out the old one and press in the new one (cheap, should take no more than 15 mins and 20 bucks).

Now you just reinstall it and you're good to go.

* This is assuming all 92-00 Civics use the same setup.

Does the front knuckle have to come off? Is this an easy task??
I recently changed my steering rack boot and trying to familirise myself with down there.

Where do i get OEM "STYLE" bearing from?

What damage will occur if i wait (till after xmas) to replace it?

If you have changed your suspension before, you can take off the whole knuckle and arm assembly. Its very easy, just jack the car up and take a look, you'll see how everything is connected as its just 1 piece held on the the chassis by a few bolts.

Do you have auto parts stores over there? We have them all over the place here, just ask the people working at the counter to find the wheel bearing for you. Wheel bearings are not cheap in general starting at $130ish and up per bearing.

I would not drive around too long on a worn bearing. The grease/oil could leak out and dry and seize the bearing to the hub. Once its in there you are screwed and can risk damaging other vital components of the car.
