Just bought an EG breeze with a dead speedo, at freeway speeds it someones flick from zero to 160km/h suddenly and keeps going past 200 and round the clock and then back to zero again!

The Odometer however works perfectly.

I'm assuming the Odo and Speedo gets the same input from the VSS, thus the speedo itself is faulty. I'll check the VSS and all the wiring ealy next week.

Any of you had the same experience?

Thanks in advance.

Id say your VSS is gone

if odo stepper motor workin well then wiring is ok.

theres either a prob in the speedo driver circuit on the speedo pcb or the needle has been pulled off at some stage & it is simply just slippin or not pressed back on properly.

Thanks guys for the advice.

Had another look at the speedo face in daylight this morning, the needle has dropped below the zero and the needle stopper. I'll dismantle the cluster and reinstall the needle and see if that fixes the problem b4 I send the unit away to an instrument place.

sounds like the VSS is dead

looks like I'll check the VSS with my multimeter 1st b4 dismantling my cluster then.

Thanks.

that would be wise

Bought a used VSS from the local Honda wrecker, installed it and the speedo now works most of the time. But sometimes the needle stays at zero until 40km/h or so and flicks up all of a sudden. And if it works from zero the needle is jerky from 20-60km/h and 60-20km/h ranges. At higer speeds everything seems fine.

Could the old faulty VSS cause consequential damage to the speedo stepper motor by pressing the needle over the max speed and against the stopper a few times?

I'll send the cluster to an instrument place if I had to but that would cost me at least $150-200 for them to service the unit.

checked grounds ? (thermo / gearbox / radiator support etc)

checked the actual connection to the VSS ? Might have some old coolant in the connections etc...

connections looks good, and I have sprayed contact cleaner on the plug before installing the VSS.
