View Full Version : My wife just backed my 06 Civic into a rock :(

I haven't seen it yet (I'll post pictures tonight/tomorrow) but she says it's bad enough that it will need replacing/respraying.

I wonder if it's worth looking in to an aftermarket or OEM bumper, if it's going to cost the same as a genuine one, I may as well get something that looks a little sportier, no?

I've done a search but it's hard to find parts lists for the 06 Civic, could anyone please give me an indication of how much a full rear bumper (painted) would cost on an 06 Civic, or options for replacing it with an aftermarket bodykit style rear bumper (do they even do full bumpers, or are they just bolt-on skirts?).

Thanks!

Wife > Civic...

Get it replaced with an aftermarket if you like the look. Otherwise, stock is nice but expensive.

I agree, Wife > Civic but I'm trying to dream up how to use this as leverage in the future "oh, I can't go to the pub? Remember that time you crashed my car?"

Annyway, I manage to find the SG Car Styling website and the body kits they have their only include a small skirt on the rear bumper..I'm hoping that the damage is below that line the rear skirt would cover and this would be an easy (and cheap) fix, I'll update after I get home and have assessed the damage.

Tell her you just got the bill for the repair and you want to go to the pub with the mates to alleviate the shock.

LOL for a second there I thought u wanted him to get an aftermarket wife! (great misread)

Good luck finding parts for the car... I guess if you wanted to get a full bodykit (Wald?), now might be a good time.

Yeah, I could fit out the wife with a nice body kit, but I'm not sure my insurance would cover it :)

I have attached some pictures showing the damage, she did the old "overstate the damage over the phone so reality is easier" trick and it's nowhere near as bad as I had imagined.

There's good news and bad news.

The good news is that the paint scrape is below the line that a rear skirt would cover, so a body kit is a viable option to cover the damage. The bad news (as shown in the first and third picture) is that when she hit the rock it pushed the bumper up and forwards, warping the pointy part where it joins the body, this has caused the bumper to come away from the body slightly...only I will ever notice this but it will bug me forever. It also popped out one of the screws holding the bumper to the body on the inside of the rim, I managed to rescrew this one and it fixed the warping a little.

So, the way I see it my options are:

1) replace the whole bumper
2) respray the existing bumper and have them reshape the warped bits (if possible)
3) Live with the slight warping and buy a painted body kit
4) Get a full body kit, this would (?) replace the whole bumper with a new one (JaCe, you mentioned Wald, could you elaborate a bit? EDIT: Found Wald at SG, thanks)
5) Forget about it, the damage isn't that bad.

I think of all the options, 2 is probably the cheapest (my sister in law owns a 06 Civic too, and did almost exactly the same thing, she got a quote of $250 to remove and respray) but that only gets me the car in the state it was before the rock abuse. Of course, 5 is the cheapest but I'm not sure I can live with it.

1 is probably pretty expensive given that it would need to be a genuine Honda part..then 3 (SG has body kits for $750 painted) and 4 being the most expensive of the lot.

Options 3 and 4 have the fact that I get a body kit going for them, so I would actually prefer them, but I'm not sure if I can justify the extra $500.

EDIT: I've been looking a the SG website thinking that they were in Australia, ugh...are those prices AUS$ or US$?

A lip will cover it. If it was me, just cover it up with touch up paint and then get the lip.

it isnt that bad..spewing you dont have a lip or else all you had to do was change the lip itself.
get some cheap asian bodyworks to do it for ya!it'll be way cheaper but just hope that they dont do a dodgy job.
or else...like aaronng said try to see if a rear lip will do the job.

Wash your mouth out! You're probably right, the car will surely see worse in the coming years but if nothing else, this is a great excuse to get a body kit ;)

Eh its easy to back the new Civic into things. The rear view vision is not too good at all. You cant see much through the back window.

That's why you check for inanimate objects behind your car before you get in.

mate its not that bad.... probably not noticible to the naked eye unless u looked really hard for it....:p

but yer the aftermarket bodykit does sound nice...or if the bumper gets more damage over time maybe u can claim insurance? im guessing ur excess shoudnn't be too high so it should be alright.

If you angle the side mirrors it's not too bad- what concerns me more is the visibility at the front where apart from winding down the windows and moving your head around, there's not much more one can do except rely on instinct.

EDIT: Not sure how you guys find it, but this is particularly difficult for me when I'm say.. driving uphill in an unfamiliar carpark. With all the things on the ground (not sure what they're called- like "guides" for your car to follow), narrow spaces, and being unable to see them... I am compelled to drive very slowly/carefully to prevent damage to my Civic.
