Aim: to paint rotors & calipers

Required:
• Can of paint, colour of your choice
• something to scrub the rust off rotors
• newspaper/white pages
• sticky tape

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/4964/cimg0756hl7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Steps:
• take off the wheels.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4735/cimg0763ua9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

• Scrub the rust off the rotors

http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/4157/cimg0758ew2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

• cover the caliper or rotor(what ever you want to paint first) with newspaper.

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/5130/cimg0760ui0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

• don’t worry too much about over sprays the break pad will clean that up it self after you take it for a drive. Turn/move the rotor around with hands to make sure its covered completely
• now let the paint on the rotor to dry a bit ~15-20mins before moving on to caliper.
After the paint is dried off cover it up with newspaper so you can spray the calipers, make sure the paint is not sticky anymore, other wise the paper will leave marks behind once you take it off

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9884/cimg0761bz3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

• spray the caliper to the colour of your choice, make sure the paint covers all of it.

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/4122/cimg0762zu4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

• And your done, apply clear coats if you can be stuffed. Put the rims back on and repeat the same steps on the other 3 calipers. If you get over sprays like I did, just colour in with a black marker afterwards it should do the trick.

Other comments:
Make sure to wait for the paint to dry afterwards be4 taking the car for a drive, u don’t want all the break dust get stuck on the new paint. There’s no need for special heat prove paint, normal paints will do the job it will just get baked right in.
And yes i know its dodgy. :p

no offense but i think it would only take 30min more max and about 10 dollars to do it properly...so why don't u just do it properly lol

they make special brake paint for a reason...i don't think they would make it for the sake of it

what he said ^.

brakes have this really strange tendency to um...get hot? kinda like your rocker cover.

proper paint will last much much longer.

I'm sure there's a much better way to do it....my and my housemate just did my gf's EK1 with proper masking and sanding tools..as well as high temp. spray paint. We used high temp. paint for the engine covers instead

Basically mask everything that doesn't need to be sprayed(Cos you dun wanna get spray all over the place). We also removed the caliper, sanded and buffed it before spraying. And allowing time to dry before fitting back on.Rotor was done more or less the same way.Masking the surrounding bits, sanding and buffing off the rust then spraying the centre and diameter of the rotor then buffing off excess spray.

Abit of hardwork and patience will give you a better quality end result so it might be worth spending some time redoing yours. Its your car and i'm sure u want it to look its best :)

Good luck with it mate.

suggest caliper paint or engine enamel. I use mineral turpentine to clean the area first.

preludacris
31-12-2006, 02:17 PM
yeah me too

-high temp paint.
-clean the area with degreaser or turps first.
-mask off the area.
-not necessary to remove calipers etc. just spray while its on, a lil overspray will be rubbed off the rotors and worn off the pads in 1 trip. (the first time you brake its a lil sticky coz the paint is on the pad, it wears off tho in a couple stops.)

btw, red looks so cheap these days

and 2ndly, does anybody know of a high temp spray thats Metallica blue? similar to spoon calipers ? mine are gold, and gold is becoming the new Red, so looking for a change in a few months

you can buy anodized blue brake paint. not sure where you will find it though. ive seen it stocked at the warehouse that i work at.

i've seen this in person. it actually looks alright and serves its purpose for being DIY Ghetto. As long as he doesnt mess with the mechanics of the brake calipers then me thinks its all good.

it kinda does koz its got paint all over the the brake pads and its guides

so when he changes pad it wont be pleasent

why not just take the rotor and caliper off ... doesnt take dat long

Just get spoon calipers and you'll be fine

Use masking tape to cover everything you dont want to paint. Any overspray will go onto the masking tape and you wont have to worry about it?

Oh, plus you should always use proper brake paint, coz it can handle the heat and brake dust and crap a lot better.

you really have a messy job .. though is a nice spoon colour :) ... paint are every where in ur brake disc dude...

EuroDude

U should also cover the screw threads, u dont want the paint to seize up the bolts.

This is pretty dodgy guys, but I did use proper brake paint and tried to mask as well as possible without any newspaper in the house! New rims arriving soon.

Clean and ready to paint.

Note ingenious use of windcheater taped to headlight and indicator(to avoid paint damage) LOL

Im thinkin about doing mine soon, but I wanna do it properly - removing the caliper and bridge completely from the car. Thing is, does anyone know if its safe to detach the brake cables from the caliper?

kraiye
17-04-2007, 05:49 PM
yeah sure its safe as long as you properly bleed them on replacement to make sure no air bubbles

m3ntAL_l2
17-04-2007, 06:05 PM
^^ yep, the only reson i didnt to it the "proper" way is because i cbf bleed em afterwards. also i cbf takin em apart :/

TheSaint
20-04-2007, 02:29 PM
wen i do mine im gona take em off but not detach the lines, remove the pads, sit them opened on blocks of wood or bricks next to the rotor, everything masked, and then paint em, give me more room to clean them + prep them properly and will be easy to make sure paint only goes on the caliper, not bolts, or rotor etc

I was wanting to strip my caliper paint so I can put a fresh coat on, can anyone recommend me a product to do this?

Could try Molto universal Paint Stripper as used HERE (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16974)

ok got my first coat on.

if you know how to bleed brakes (and its not hard!) i'd suggest removing the callipers completely. the time i spent masking 1 wheel properly - then doubled for the other wheel - i could have removed the callipers completely and bled the lines when done.

unfotunatley i can only do one wheel at a time which really sux! i'm not on very level ground and am reluctant to put the whole front up on stands :(

Removing calipers is the only way of doing it if you want a good finish

I'll post pictures of the NSX calipers I did the other week

While you're painting them you might as well replace the seals

if you know how to bleed brakes (and its not hard!) (

i dont, can someone do a DIY on it please so i can take the calipers off when doing it, coz i think masking and all that would probably take longer as u mentioned. thanks.

there's a diy here (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11867&highlight=bleed+brakes) but you can do it without taking all your rims off... thats a bit extreme - and so is 3 bottles of fluid, you shouldn't need that much.
It can be done easily without help, just takes more time. All you do is: pump brake, open valve...., close valve, top up fluid. then repeat till you see clean fluid come out.
It's best to let the reservoir get as low as possible without letting air in so you don't contaminate too much of the new fluid with the old crap thats already in there. Just remember to keep closing the valve and checking your reservoir so it doesnt get too low.

While you're at it you may as well do this (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15335) if you have power steering and this (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20212&highlight=clutch+fluid+change) if you have a hydraulic clutch
both easy and well worthwhile to learn - and sure as hell beats paying someone else to do them ;)

hahah i ill give ya credit for adminitin 2 it bein dodgy, sounds like somthin my cuzin would do after he just finished up choppin his springs lol

i rate the blue u got there might try that one me self, whats the deal with the rotors rusting so much anyhow? mine where rusted 2 the shit when i picked mine up.

i must say am a bit more picky when i came 2 doin this, i used a screw driver with a proper sander attachment to get rid of the rust, then cleaned it up with some spirits, then using some high temp spray i sprayed the shit into a cup, then cause im so picky used a paint brush 2 do it perfect, gave it one coat, waited about 30min then did a second coat and left it over night.
Perfect :D

Now all i need to do are the calipars

ok here we go, all in all took me 2 days (2 calipers per day) as i left em on and also left it 2 dry over night, didnt come out 100% the way i wanted it as i couldnt find a high temp primer nor did i use a sealerbut im still quite happy with the result.

danau: one thing to learn about painting is that a good job comes more from the preparation, not so much the painting. take your time to prepare the surface and mask surrounding areas properly

micsway
09-07-2007, 10:06 PM
i definetly agree with that, take your time 2 get all the crap off the capilers and rotor (especially the calipers theres a lot of build up on those) a good hand drill with a good drill bit should do the job then just use a bit of steel wool 2 get into those places u cant reach
