View Full Version : Spoon's advice for VTEC and Honda lovers

Here are some infos that I got from Spoon's President (Tatsuru Ichisima) for anyone who doesn't know yet.

Using genuine Honda oil is the best, even when you race on track once or twice a month. Genuine honda oil (SAE 10w-30) is good fro stop and go, warming and cooling for everyday use.

when you go track, engine oil is not the one you worry about, but the transmission fluid that you need to change. cos the transmission receives the most stress on the track (during track driving, drivetrain receives the most wear and stress, FF cars even MORE on the tranny). Oil pump will forcefully applies the oil to every section all the time, whereas the trans oil will just sit there and bath the tranny like a hot spring.

engine oil is put through a strainer, therefore the oil is cooled (by water), pressurized and then cleaned. so in other words, the engine oil is taken good care, but the trans oil is left alone.

engine and trans oil should be replaced at the same service schedule (especially on type R engines, being the same as fully tuned toyota or nissan engines).

NEVER USE engine flush or flushing oil!!! (I notice alot of workshops use this thing)
when the flushing oil removes foreign debris like metal chips and dirt, it also gets into places like your engine journals and messes up your clearance. ESPECIALLY on TYPE R...:zip:

and here is some bonus for the Jazz/fit owners:
Jazz/fit's chassis is highly developed and designed by Honda, it has the gas tank placed in the centre and extruded out higher is the key, it actually a double layer construction chassis.
that in the world of GT racing, its an open secret to build the floor hard and the ceiling soft, therefore more rigid structure and stiffness, the result is better handling since its direct.

so , the fit is already gifted from the start to be made into touring or racing car with its body structure

hope this helps ;)

That's fine if it is genuine honda oil. What Ichishima-san meant was not to use engine flush products. Those are a liquid with the viscosity of diesel (very watery) and it flushes and pushes dirt into the bearing journals, and messing with the clearances.

using honda feo is best? only if u live sumwhere cold :)

edit: sry was only referring to f series engines here where 10w-30 is not recommended for ambient temps over 40 degrees.

Whether you are in the snowfields or the desert, the operating temperature of your engine is around 100-120 C.

Your CD5 is specced for 10/15w-40 if it is an F series.

B and K are specced for 10w-30, so FEO is THE BEST mineral oil for it.

best mineral oil? but is mobil 1 fully synthetic (lets not to start a 'mobile 1 isn't fully synthetic because of...) 10w-30 > Honda FEO 10w-30 ?

best mineral oil? but is mobil 1 fully synthetic (lets not to start a 'mobile 1 isn't fully synthetic because of...) 10w-30 > Honda FEO 10w-30 ?

In terms of longevity under spirited driving, Mobil1 > FEO
In terms of first start of the day protection, FEO > Mobil1
In terms of protection under high heat and stress (track) Mobil1 > FEO
In terms of engine noise, FEO > Mobil1

If you do your own oil changes, and change oil every 5000km/3 months, then FEO > Mobil1.

The advantage of synthetics is that they last longer. Protection-wise, FEO is just as good as long as it hasn't broken down.

So for street driving with 6 month changes, FEO=Mobil1
Street with 3 month changes, FEO > Mobil1
Track, Mobil1 > FEO
If you are a bloody hoon who uses full throttle at every light, intersection and ramp, Mobil1 > FEO (but you'll probably have your license suspended before you can enjoy the benefits of Mobil1)
Extended oil changes of over 6 months Mobil1 > FEO

Yup, and remember that regular oil changes with FEO is as good if not better than extended durations with a full synthetic.

There are 4 types of Honda Japan oil.... Only one of them is full synthetic. http://www.honda.co.jp/afterservice/parts/oil/index.html.
As to whether they are semi, I'm not sure as their site doesn't mention it.

I though that in Japan, the Honda OEM engine oil for the Type R is Semi-Synthetic instead of our Mineral based oil?

bennjamin
02-01-2007, 09:16 PM
i think it applies best ~ to change oil every 5000k and be happy.
If you are tracking your car , you are going to run with fresh oil before and after regardless :)

You have no basis on calling a massive car companies "lead" oil crap , and dont even know what type of oil you use in your own car ?

AUDM FEO is a fully mineral oil that shits over all other mineral oils and a few semi-synthetic oils. It's a good oil for a 6 month service interval.

For other car brands that specify a 12 month interval, a full synthetic is the way to go.

If penzoil is full syn, it should be ok. Just make sure it has API SL or SM certification, then it'll be sufficient to protect your car in daily driving conditions. As to sticking to Penzoil or to go FEO, it's up to you and your wallet.
