i'm trying to figure out how i can get more power without a turbo and trying to keep to a $2000 budget
iwas thinking with my single cam, if i could take the top end off and replace it with a Vtec 1.6 head. is it possible?
Basically, no.
You've got a d-series, therefore, the head you swap must also be d-series. You could swap on a sohc vtec head (ala. mini-me) but the gains arnt great.
I'd look into swapping in a b-series if you're not going to go with a turbo...

Save up more and get the turbo setup..
I went from a D16y1 to B18c and there wasnt much in it (stock to stock) at least not for 5k i spent.
Do the head swap and turbo it mate, and just be happy with 6 to 8psi :)
yeah best bang for your bucks for a d-series is to go turbo
sell your car and buy another one

Or they have spent money on other things and want more power now...
What would you recommend he buys???
um not to be mean, he doesn't even know what his own car is - should just buy a civic dohc or integra

Look at his avitar, he's just sitting in a cave looking for little children.
Mikey Coupe you can do the head swap and a few other little things like a turbo head gasket and ARP head studs to beef up the motor. Then safely add a turbo kit at 6-8 psi. If you wanted to do a swap to a B-seris motor you would need to save up more. There are also other bolt-ons you can do to the D-series to give it some more power, like a intake manifold, throttle body, fuel system, turbo, cat back exhaust, cam, cam gear, ecu upgrade, and tranny work. Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.

i agree with locote.... if your a member on this forum then you love your car... i reckon save up for a bit longer and go the turbo option too... just don't run it at a psi that's going to hurt your engine.... 6-8psi would be a maximum unless you did some work to make your engine stronger (forged pistons etc)

Maybe new owner, so can't turbo.
I/H/E
Improve intake, get headers, and an exhuast.
See what you can do about getting 2nd hand.
Remmeber, no Pod Filters, box it if you do.
Do exhuast first, then headers, then intake.

dont give up ur d-series engine....btw, vti or gli coupe?
well, anyway, try to searching the parts in US, u could find many cheap and nice parts in US, such as DC sport header, fidenza flyweel, AEM cam pully, port and polished D16Y8 vtec head, those parts are very popular and easy to find in US ebay, but hard in oz.....anyway, afta the head changed, put on a heavy duty clutch and lighten flywheel (DTM or fidenza flywheel r gd for d series), header, VAFC or chipped ECU installed, the car will become so different......
n also u got to think about the labour cost......$2000 is no problem if just for those parts (may be parts + installation fees if u can find cheap labour). hope can help.
PS: i dont think $2000 can get a turbo chage+get it installed, the labour cost is not cheap even if the turbo kit is bolt-on.
