PCV Valve

I have a '99 EM1 VTI-R. The PCV valve has been replaced with a K&N crank case filter. I have a few questions regarding it.

#1 - Does this filter provide any advantage over the standard setup or would I be better off without it?

#2 - Should it be cleaned like a K&N air filter? If so how should I clean it?

#3 - I've read in other threads regarding excessive oil consumption that it can be a result of a faulty PCV valve. I've noticed the engine appears to use a bit of oil (has 120000km on it). Could this filter have anything to do with it?

Are you sure you don't mean the rocker cover vent?

yeah. Thats probably what it is. From other posts I had read it sounded like it was the same thing.
