I've just had a thought and although my field in work, i've never actually thought about the effects of using a higher octane fuel to counteract detonation and introducing more timing as a result of less chance of having detonation occur... Ill use my ed as an example..

The car runs with 20deg advance timing outta the box on 91 octane fuel.. to me this his a quite high but thats how it is.
98 octane fuels are harder to ignite than 91. It also has a higher energy storage compared to 91 so the resulting explosion is bigger..

Maybe i could advance the timing a lil bit more to get the most out of the fuel? (i know a shit load about cars due to my work.. but fuel is another area i am unfamiliar with)

Anyone with fuel knowledge out there???

*shrugs* book says 20deg

i put the gun on it and put it on the markings..

i thought so :) looks like im gonna and advance it a lil to gain all the properties that 98fuels have :)

98RON is not harder to ignite, it just burns slower, hence the need for more timing.

HOWEVER, if you've switched to 98RON over 91RON to try and get rid of detonation, you may not need any more timing as it will already be as much as it needs.

Last rule. More timing DOES NOT EQUAL more power. Only use as much timing as you need, not as much as you'd like.

10years later... i already did it!!!!

Shes much stronger now, and i onyl went up a notch about 3deg.. i found i could go more but to no gain so i figured by bother. extra 3deg and its @ its peak so thats good enough for me :)

unfortunately no...But i will take it to a dyno and set it up properly :)
