Aim: Give New Life To old Rims

Required: 1 / 2 Days, Paint of your Choice, Sand paper, Degreaser/cleaning agent, *option* primer

So the Story Starts:

well, after trying to sell the rims, i decided that it wasnt going anywhere ,
so i figured best thing is to go ahead and spray em,
so heres a little write up over 2 weeks, "sundays is DIY day"

Step 1: Prepare rims for spraying, i got a sanding block and basically cleaned all the edges up and sanded anything which looked dodgy, then i used degreaser and soapy water and a brush / toothbrush and basically cleaned everything i could, lucky for me, i got a high pressure hose, for those out there who decide to do this DIY,
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont use the degreaser on the grass lol,
ive got alien crop marks all over my lawn now, and had to deal with my parents afterward, anyhow, after washing let them dry etc etc

The Products i got :

Cleaning / Spraying Rims... Problem = grass.

Step 2: after drying the rims, and there good to go, tape tyres up with masking tape

Step 3: umm im not sure weather other people do this or not,
but i decided to primer the rims before spraying, meh its what i do i guess
so basically u wanna keep clean coats, and keep it light, i used etch primer from auto one i think it was like 14 bucks or something, i had problems with the can clogging, so keep a rag near for blocking and keep a decent distance so u dont get spluts ...
heres the primed product:

TIP FROM JOYRIDE - If you have this problem, put your spray cans in a bucket of warm water for 20 mins before you spray the tyres. that way the paint doesnt get clogged up and become blotchy on the rims or get spurts from the nozzle.

well that one was one sunday, just prepairing the rims,
i kept them in a decent place away from crap and let them dry for the week

2nd sunday

PAINT TIME
Step 4 : ok, colour selection, i was searching around and looking for paints which fit what i wanted, personally i dont really like gloss spray, looks cheap and nasty, and i dont want matt cause its matt? anyhoo
i found satin black, and it was real nice, in between matt and gloss, just a nice sheen,
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/int3gra-t/Photo-0083.jpg
i kept nice clean light coats keeping distance, and using the spray like there was an endless amount, i sprayed let it dry, came back and did another coat, i probably put around 4 - 5 light coats, and checked for missing sprays etc,
"option" i sprayed the inside of the rim also, same deal etc etc,

nice work.

put your spray cans in a bucket of warm water for 20 mins before you spray the tyres. that way the paint doesnt get clogged up and become blotchy on the rims or get spurts from the nozzle.

Another tip is to Hold the spray can upside down after use and let it spray untill all you can feel is air comin out that will keep the nozzle from clogging...

OoO yeah i know that one, but u cant do that with primer, because primer's gas rating is a lot lower than paint spray cans,
so yeah doesnt really apply to primer :)

hahah love the alien crop..
question.. did you remove the weights on your wheels or did you over spray them..

coz when you get a wheel balance and htey remove the old weights wouldnt the old colour be right there and when they put new weights on.. they aint going to put them where the old spots were.. hrmm....

Also did you have gutter marks on your wheels.. did you sand them down smooth or left it as it is?

But excellent write up though.. Been thinkin of doing these to mine.. White wheels on a red car.. hrmm....

Int3gra-T
19-01-2007, 06:25 PM
i smoothed the gutter marks as best as i could really,
as for the weights, they were sprayed over but you can still see the numbers n stuff, as for them putting the weights back on the same spot,
thats another issue,
the person i have sold the rims 2 i have given him the paint so if he fks em up
he can fix it lol

white looks nice on red like that turbo JDM dc2...
Good luck anyhow

beautiful work!!! i will be doing this to mine over the next few days...

...has anyone tried to use body filler or anything to smooth out/ hide any scratches from hitting kurbs?

if so, please share the process. i want a pristine finish!

Int3gra-T
22-01-2007, 11:27 PM
body filler and stuff would probably work.,
i just basically sprayed the primer with good coats to fill the scratches..
thanks anyhow :)

hang on can i just confirm that you managed to paint all 4 wheels including insides with 1 250mg can of paint???

Int3gra-T
06-02-2007, 08:08 AM

Thanks a heap for this DIY!!! got mine done...

However, putting clearcoat on Satin Black really ruined the colour effect between gloss/matte. So i sprayed on top of it with Satin Black again.

Whats amazing about Satin Black is when light hits it from different angles.... can kinda look gunmetal too....

that is sweet!!!!

did you sand everthing first or did you simply just use the etch primer then the satin?

either way... its turned out awesome!!

Int3gra-T
10-02-2007, 02:02 PM
sanded, lightly not over board,
primer then satin black
