Well, i bought an EK4 @ 55000km, with logs books and all, it's supposedly done all the major tune ups til 100,000km even though the car it hasn't done that much km's....

the car is now at roughly 68 000km, how do i know if the timing belt has been changed??
doesn't state in the service manual..?

the last few services was done @ "The Motor Car Workshop" in Botany with the "Authorised Honda Dealer Stamp" on it... would they have records on what they've done to the car?

My parents Accord had it's Major service @ Peter Warren for 80 000km not long ago and we had to pay extra for the timing belt..

i might ring up these places to see if they keep records of anything.. but if they have no idea would there be any other way??

If not i might just have to change the timing belt just incase..

any other suggestions in finding out if it has been changed? or if it's part of a major service??

TA!

The Timing Belt should be changed every 100,000km on most honda's.
80,000km for an Accord seems strange. It must have just been a Drive Belt Inspection instead (My Euro's belts are checked every 40,000km according to the schedule).

Even so.. my Civic, and also my friends Civic reached 200,000km on the original timing belt :p so yeah they are quite tough even with a good thrashing.

Just replace it every 100,000km

Well, 100,000km Or every 5 years.

Things degrade over time, not just through use. i.e. Brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years as it absorbs water over time, making it much less effective.

This might be why it's had servicing up to 100,000kms even though it's done less, because the owner has been extra vigilant and serviced it by it's age, not just mileage. This is a very good sign for you and your car, if it has actually been done.

I'd call and find out. They should keep records. IF not, you might be able to get them to take off the rocker cover (the lid of the engine, basically) and take a peek, they might be able to see if it looks like an old, fairly used belt, or one that's in A1 condition, and consistent with being changed recently.

Yeah both my car and parents accord been tuned by age not mileage,
but yeah.. probs have to give them a call, or take to a mechanic to have a geez, thanks

but im more worried about the age of the car not really the mileage

or i might just change it at its 100 000 mark just to be safe.. coz been giving it a hard time..

mechanics can tell buy looking at the belt?? hmm..

Is it even possible or legal or allowed that a place other than Honda can give the Honda Dealer/Service stamp?

If not, then that's dodge...If it was done at a Honda dealership, then they would have records on what has been done cos they give you that on the receipt.

But i sps even then, how do u know for sure the mechanic actually did it right??

I would just change it at 100,00 too. Apparently if that goes, all hell breaks loose...

just leave it till 100,000kms, you generally wont have problems with the ek civics.

If unsure, just change the belt even if it has only 55000km. Since it's meant to be changed every 100,000km, that's the equivalent of 6 years.

But Euros don't have a timing belt!

Yep I know that, it uses a chain instead.

I was refering to the other belts that need to be inspected every 40,000km, for power steering etc.

If you think the Honda Timing belt is older than 100,000km or if it looks old or damaged, then yeah u should change it.

If its another brand other than honda, you may wanna replace it with an OEM belt since some aftermarket ones can be of lesser quality.

At least if the accessory belt snaps, the damage won't be as bad as for a timing belt snapping.

It'll cost more than $80. Labour will be the killer. It'll still be cheaper than replacing the engine with another B series through.

How often does the Euro's chain need replacing? Isnt it like every 150,000km or something?

Belt can snap anytime, even if there new they can snap. Personally i'll change the belt, workshop could of done a dodgy by putting down as they have changed it.

Never. :p It's meant to be maintenance free.

But the chain tensioner does wear out. When that is replaced, the timing chain is also replaced at the same time.

yeah about $341 full retail on most model. some accords/preludes/legends will be more expensive as they have balance belts to be done too. usually some of the some of the deals are shot so they need replacing. sometimes the tensioners need replacement too but they obviously don't know until they strip it down.
funny thing is some of the tensioners are unavailble from honda for some newer models :zip:
