Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself nor Ozhonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

Aim:
To replace an old/damaged/malfunctioning locking mechanism
Required:
Large phillips head screwdriver
Medium phillips head screwdriver
10mm socket with ratchet and extension
Pointy nose pliers
Small flat head screwdriver
Tape or glue
Steps:
Begin by unscrewing the interior door handle. Once undone, slide the handle towards the back of the car to dislodge it, then unclip it from the wire behind it (be VERY careful not to break these clips!!!). These clips are undone by holding the wire still, then pulling the clip away from the wire. The wire should then easily come out of its mounting hole.

Remove the mirror cover with your hands by prying your fingers in behind the upper corner and pulling it out.

Remove the door handle by grabbing it on the edge and pulling (gently, but with force)

Unscrew the two screws I have marked in red below. Then disconnect the wires I have marked in yellow below. You may also choose to remove the power window controller to make getting the wires out easier. This is done by undoing the lone rear screw, then the two half way up its body.

Remove the cover to your speaker using the small flat head screwdriver. Then remove the screws holding the door card to the body (You don't have to undo the ones holding the speaker, its not necessary).

To remove the door card, go to the bottom end towards the rear of your car. You will find a space just big enough to squeeze your fingers into.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o302/RiCeMaTiC/6.jpg

Pull the door card outwards from the frame. You will hear popping noises, but don't be scared, these are just the plugs that hold the door card in place. Once the card has been removed from the frame, slide it upwards over the lock pin and then remove from the door. If you have the space, disconnect the wires from your speaker and place the door card somewhere safe.

Remember that clip I told you not to break before? Well here is a very out of focus picture of one of those. DO NOT BREAK THESE. If they are broken, the mechanism will not be able to sit together reliably and the wires will fall out. I broke one myself, but I salvaged one off of my old mechanism. There are only two or three on there!

Unscrew the three screws inside your door to dislodge the mechanism. I have shown the holes after they have been unscrewed here.

Peel back the plastic (and probably fairly dirty) sheet. Be careful not to tear it. Shown in the picture below, highlighted with yellow, is my keyless entry mechanism. This is an aftermarket upgrade, and simply works by manipulating the locking pin so as to lock or unlock the door. As I have central locking, I only needed to install this on the drivers side door :-).

Follow the wire running from the mechanism, this is the central locking wire. You will come to a plug where you can disconnect this. Do so.

Undo the two 10mm bolts here to remove the exterior door handle. I have circled them in red. Take note of the two connections I have highlighted in yellow, as you are about to disconnect them and should recognise what each of them do. The thick one is for the handle, it has a threaded end. The thin one is for the lock barrel to manipulate the lock, should you use your key to lock/unlock.

Once your handle is removed, carefully undo the lock manipulating wire. You should then be able to spin your door handle around so as to unscrew it from the thread.

Remove the wire connecting the interior door handle from the mechanism. The mechanism should now be ready to be removed. Carefully move the mechanism out around the window support and out through the frame. This is made easier by disconnecting all the wires from the mechanism, though is possible if you leave them connected.

Place the new mechanism where the old one used to sit. Make sure all manipulation wires are sitting exactly where they were before and that the lock pin is sitting correctly (there are probably rub marks on your door where the old one used to sit). Reconnect the exterior door handle first by screwing it onto the thread, then reconnecting the lock manipulator. Bolt the handle back onto the door. Reconnect the interior door handle wire, and reconnect the central locking wire.

Now you are ready to bolt the mechanism in place. Perform a small test and see if locking and unlocking action is smooth. If there is a problem with the lock not functioning properly, look below under comments to resolve this problem.

If you removed your speaker from the doorcard earlier, replace it now. Trusting that the lock is now functioning, replace the door card. Start by sliding it down the window so the lip sits in between the frame and the glass. Ensure that the locking pin is inserted through its appropriate hole. Make sure that the power windor cables have been fed through the hole in the door card. Once the door card is sitting in place, simply firmly band around the edges of the door card for the plugs to lock in place. Replace the screws around the speaker. Your door card is now in place.

Reconnect the power window wires and replace the screws in the handle. Slot the handle cover over the handle. Slot the speaker cover back in its place. Insert the lip of the mirror cover behind the door card, then push against the frame until it locks in. Finally, reconnect the back of the interior handle with the wire which manipulates the locking mechanism. Then place the handle in the slot and slide it backwards. Screw the handle in.

ALL DONE!

Other comments
A fairly easy install, apart from the small fidgety things like squeezing the mechanism around the window frame. Just be patient. Another VERY important thing to do is to check to make sure that the locking works properly. If not, I found this to be easily fixed by lifting the outside door handle, then making the locking motion, and using the scewdriver to flick the lock catch on the mechanism itself.

Nice one. I presume this would ususally be done if the cars lock has been stuffed by thieves/vandals right?

high five!

You'd think so wouldn't you? But alas, my lock had just malfunctioned. I had tried to lock it when the catch was open, so it wouldnt lock properly. Stupid me went and bought a new mechanism, only to find my original was fine once id replaced it. Hence the selling of it. But yeah in most cases itd be to fix vandal/thief.

I'd also like to apologise for the last pic, i was using my phone camera and it doesnt macro too well.

Also i figure that half this guide is most useful for people wanting to remove their doorcards, so i thought it should be posted.

nice work,

unfortunatly they do fail from time to time
the fun part is when they fail and the door wont open :)

you have to remove the door trim from inside the car with the door closed and perswaid the lock to open. ( with a hammer and a rod :) )
