My eg5 Si broke down the other night (engine check light cam on, died a few seconds later), Battery is fine (and yes i have oil and everything), car cranks - but when its cranking there is no spark, and only sparks once i stop cranking. RACQ checked it and the guy was 100% sure it was a dizzy problem. Well, i bought a BRAND NEW dizzy, bolted it in and still the same problem.
i am now told by racq it is a sensor problem
im getting my car towed to an auto electrician on thursday, so if anyone else has had this problem or knows which sensors i should check, any help would be much appreciated!!!

might be the wiring to the dizzy itself that is shatted....
How are you testing if there is spark ?

RACQ guys tested it with something that plugged into the ignition leads with spark plug attached and you could see it spark in the engine bay.
Wiring appears to be ok....

did you get a coil and ICM with your dizzy, or did you reuse the old ones in the new dizzy from the old dizzy.

is the dizzy rotating, ( timing belt ) also have a good look at your rotor button.

check the dizzy for power.. this is a realy good thread to start with.

does the engine light come on and go out with the ignition switch being turned on ?

also have a look at the main PGMFI relay

When that happened to me it was my dizzy that was goone. Have you checked your timing belt like someone above said, take off the rocker cover off and have a peek, i was lucky enough that i didn't snap mine.

Timing belt is good, tested both dizzys - both good, re-soldered main pgmfi relay - and its still not starting.
its seems like it wants to start when i turn the ignition off (when it gets that single spark) but still no spark when cranking!
its going to be towed to an auto electrician tomorrow morning, anything else i can check before then??

my bro and i recently tested for spark using the thing you said racq guy used (looks like a spark plug right????) and it wouldn't spark either but the dizzy was fine, the button was fine so it had spark but wouldn't fire (dunno if we didn't use the little tool properly, maybe racq guy was a n00b too), our problem ended up being the fuel pump, it was sparling but since there was no fuel = no fire

This was not my civic (on which the dizzy was gone) but another car

forgot to mention

change your spark plugs

u may have flooded the cylinders too by now.

check continuity from the ecu to the dizzy on all wires.. Otherwise check all your fuses in the fuse box. I tripped a fuse once, and even though i went through them 3 times, i missed it. Same symptoms as you described, thought it was the main relay but just a fuse..

sorry, thought i answered it! it was a brand new COMPLETE dizzy.
totally brand new. no second hand parts.

the only thing the auto electrician could really tell me is that it was none of the obvious problems...

i have the same problem, check the coil, even my mechanic ca nt find out whats wrong with the car for 2 days, then he pulled his coil out from his car and try it on my car and the engine start straight away. if it is brand new check if installed properly.

;1050058']not earthed properly ?

I'd check that. I've seen it several times. Take a look at the thermostat earth

Found out the problem today! The ecu burnt out! Got my money back on the dizzy and gotta find a new ecu now.
I think its a PM7 (for d16a8) ecu? Any one have a cheap one? lol
And what ecu does a jdm zc use? is that compatable?

once, both my eg/eh civics wouldn't start at the same time, similar symptoms as you are experiencing.

si - turned out to be ignition coil
vti - was one of the fuses, can't remember which. just go through all of them, might just be a little break that you might have overlooked.

edit - ah i took too long to type. glad you found the problem.
