Hey guys

What oil would you recommend for a EK gli D16 engine, Im taking this car to track so itll be revved a fair bit all day...engine is totally stock btw

Im using 20w50 repco brand now as it was just a daily driver but want to change oil before the track

Cheers

Search man, theres soo many threads about oil/fluids lately. Just stick to Honda FEO as thats what everyone will start recommending.

And 20w-50 is too thick for your engine, which was designed to use 10w-30. If you are tracking, I'd use a 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-40 oil.

d series are reccommened to use 20w 50 my crx uses that and thats wats reccomended by all part shops and the owners book 2 any old engine should also consider usin that but it stops oil burnin and dude if ur runnin it at track look at my 1/4 mile time in track section i use the cheap oil its all da same unless u got a 50k race built engine cheap stuff does the same and genuine oil is jus the same but more expensive

You were recommended 20w-50 because your engine was burning oil. A D series in good condition without blowby requires 10w-30. BTW, did you check if your PCV valve needed replacement?

And track means circuit. Not a 1/4 mile run. For the 1/4 mile run, use any brand you want. But on the circuit where you maintain close to redline for long periods, nasty oil will break down faster than better oil.

my engine was rebuilt 5000km ago and i use 20w 5o becuase 20 ys ago wen it come out they were using that oil 2 10w 30 will come straight out the back of ur exhuast check with ur local parts shop eg repco for wat oil it should use and they will tell u 20w 50 same with honda i got my manual for it right here and it reccomends that i use 10w 30 in my gearbox not engine man its 2 thin

Is your engine a first gen D series? What does your manual recommend? There should be a chart with oil viscosities and ambient temperature in your manual.

All the D series from the EK (and I think EG) onwards use 10w-30. Honda FEO is 10w-30 as well.

I have a D-series and my manual recommends 10W-30 in ambient temperature -25 to 35 degrees C; 10W-40 in ambient temperature -20 to 40+ degrees C; 20W-40 & 20W-50 in ambient temperature -10 to 40+ degree C. I was told that older engines need a slightly heavier oil to maintain the same level of protection. I assume due to wear and increasing gap between components over time.

Personally, I use a 10W-40 35% semi synthetic, I used to use 10W-30 fortified mineral but because it's summer and we're often getting temps above 30 I'm using a slightly heavier oil so it will hold together at the higher temperatures.

I swear I searched man, the info I found wasnt specifically related to my engine

10w 30 will come straight out the back of ur exhuast
hey that rings a bell! the s2000 uses 10w30 and my rear bar gets covered in black stuff :(

Use genuine HONDA oil, you cant go wrong.
I trust honda stuff extremely but the civic gli engine wasnt designed for track/constant revving,so I wasnt sure

Yeah the honda dealer i used to work uses 20w50 which is the reason why I use it, hmm so I guess I will go 10w30 if not 10w40...which one of these is thicker? magnatec sounds good...

While we are at it can someone give me a link that explains these viscosity numbers...

The black stuff is unburnt fuel (running rich), not oil. Unburnt excess fuel comes out as black smoke. Oil burns with a blue smoke.

i was running god knows what in my dc2, very unreliable stuff, would randomly dip low than run rough... sometimes run smooth

after recommendations on here and a bit of research i made a day trip to the nearest honda dealer and picked up honda FEO (10w30) oil and filters etc and did a full replacement on my dc2 teg and my eg civic

iv never seen either of my cars run as smooth and rev as nice as they do with the honda oil in em, better fuel econ, smoother revs, its just a whole lot better... very reliable stuff =)

dont forget to run desent fuel as well

and as my motors get older i will start moving up to thicker oils... depends on how many kms the car has done or how old it is, anything below 250k kms and 1990's - mid 90's up should be fine to run honda feo or 10w30 (depending on the motor)

10w is the thickness wen its cold 40 is the thickness wen hot oil expands ie thicker wen hot 20 50w is the best oil u can put in a d series motor other stuff isnt thick enough so i suggest go and spend $100 on the best 20w 50 u can find if ur that worried and genuine honda oil is shit and dealerships jus use watevas cheap as i used to work for a dealer

if its shit... why does it work so good compared to other oils?

i mean for 1/4 mile runs your probably right... most honda owners are track racers though

alot of people are speaking from experience

i want to know.. explain yourself

Oil becomes less viscose when heated, that means it is runnier not thicker!

No, oil does not become more viscous when hot. 10 is the equivalent to a monograde oil tested using SAE methods at -18ºC, and 40 is the equivalent when at 100ºC. "w" means that the oil still flows when at winter conditions.

call me dumb but I'm running Castrol edge 5w30 Synthetic on my d16y4.
it's done 140k's and still running as smooth as new! And I change it every 5000km's....what can I say, I take good care of my ride!

Edge 5w-30 is good stuff. That is what I run in my K-series as well.
