Nickla did an oil change on my car a few weeks ago. It was quite a long drain time - at least 45 minutes from memory.

What sort of oil quantity are people putting in? The workshop manual says:

4.2 [liter] (4.4 US qt, 3.7 Imp qt) at oil change including filter
5.3 [liter] (5.6 US qt, 4.7 Imp qt) after engine overhaul

Since the oil change I have checked the oil a number of times on my driveway and it was well under full ( but over half). I put a litte more oil in and it shows to about 80% full now (my estimate looking at dip stick). I put the last 20% below full down to the slight slant on my driveway. Looking at the oil remaining in the bottle I have poured in 4.5 litres.

A few days ago I had the opportunity to check the oil after a long sitting period on a a perfectly flat surface. I checked the oil level after 12 hours on this surface. It is still reading under full - about 90% full.

Should I put in more oil despite the 4.2 as stated in the manual? Maybe it was the long drain period but I am well over the 4.2 litres now and still not full.

4.5 is ok. My dealer has used up about 4.8L of my oil during servicing before. The 4.2L number is probably for a level midway on the stick.

Ta Aaronn - I want to go over 4.5 now to take it closer to the full line on a flat surface. It will probably take me to 4.7 litres.

Yup, that's fine. I usually have mine about 1-2mm above the full dot. It helps when cornering hard under heavy throttle.

If you 've changed the oil filter that would probably explain the extra oil that you need to top it up to the full mark on the dipstick.

Nah the 4.2 in the manual includes a change of oil filter.

The 4.2L figure is probably based on the drain time for a "standard" service duration.

4.8 is what I normally put in, my normal drain time is about 10mins though.

depends how long you let it drain. In most cases 4.4-4.5 litres is the average for me (inc oil filter) but on dead days i can get it to about 4.7-4.8ish :P

Cheers fellas - seems like the 4.2 in the workshop manual is too conservative. Glad I checked because I thought maybe I had a leak somewhere...

You should tell the dealer to give back you the unused oils... then you can start accumulating the left overs :p

I've done a change on a euro and I can put at most 4.9litres maybe 5 the bottle isn't as accurate as a gun no BS. At dealers and at home you guys will notice there will and always will be a small amount of oil in the sump due to it's design but I use a vacuum to suck all that nasty shit out. Next time you try a change at home grab a allen key you get free with all sorts of crap the L shaped one and after the oil is slowly dripping insert into the hole and keep going back and forth to get more oil out.
