Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation on what oil,
that is fairly cheap (say $35 for 5L) for a prelude with a h23 that is slowly burning it

Why not check your PCV valve to see if the spring has weakened?

Otherwise, I'd use 10w-50 (either mineral or synthetic). Why not try Shell Helix Plus 15w-50 semi-synth? It's cheap and good.

it isnt my car obviously..
i will check the PCV.. but we are 90% sure it is rings..

was thinking 40w, so 50w might be the go

Try 15w-50 first. If it still burns, then go 15/20w-60.

it's not a matter of what oil, it's what's causing it to burn. could be something simple......or could mean a head rebuild lol

Safeway/Coles/Home brand oils are the cheapest.....

ended up using mobil syth s 10-40w ($30)
reduced the burning a fair bit, not totally gone, but an improvement

might try some 50w stuff next time

as said we are pretty sure it is the piston rings.. the owner is saving for either a rebuild or a replacement engine

just wondering (sort of related to this post) do some oils not hold up in possibly 'hotter' running engines?

the reason i ask is, i bought a crx (ed9) few weeks back, with blown gearbox, and about 130k on the clock, when i got it checked the oil and it looked good and it wasnt blowing any smoke or anything, then when i replaced the gearbox, i decided whilst its on stands ill do an oil change, bought somethin like 15-40w castrol oil, not the cheapest but not the best, then when i was driving the car started to notice it was blowing some smoke, checked the oil looked a bit burnt but not bad so kept going and checked it after driving like 500-600km, and the oil was noticably burnt (black) and used quite abit (half way between the two points on the dipstick)
so decided to get some more expensive oil, went for motoul 20-40w, and now driven the same distance (5-600km) and the oil is clean as it was to begin with and not used any at all.

i also noticed on the motoul oil bottle that it said it was desiged for high temperatures or something along those lines,
basiclly i was starting to get worried that the rings were gone in the engine thus the buring oil, but with the better oil seems to be fine, so i was thinking are some oils just not suitable for some engines?
like i was just thinking that ur prelude might not be so bad more that the oil isnt good enough? so i was thinking not the best to go putting in oil because its 'fairy cheap'

just like to know what other people think/what they're experiences are, as i wouldnt want to see some one possibly ruin their engine, or do an un-neccasary rebuild (as i was thinking i might have to do by the way my car was using oil)

cheers

If it was the Castrol 15w-40 in the red bottle (GTX3), that is a mineral oil and actually is one that I avoid because it was gumming up the injectors of our car.
