View Full Version : WARNING! Thick rear sway bars on the Euro

Just got this from tsx.acurazine.com. A member snapped his swaybar mounting point on his CL9! He was using a 22mm comptech RSB with ESP poly bushings (Comptech RSB used to come with softer rubber bushings)

http://tsx.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36339

Here's a pic from gsclifton, note that the mount is broken in 2 places as indicated by the arrows.

Is this a common thing for the euro? Is the mount connected directly to the subframe?

Nope, this is the first time I've heard of. Usually it's the endlinks that break first. But now Comptech is supplying beefier endlinks with their kits, so the weakest "link" is now the mount.

Terrible!!!! Was thinking of installing the Whiteline 18mm swaybar but having seconds thoughts now. Has anyone install the Whitelin rear swaybar? What's your verdict on it?

I'd rather snap an endlink.....

Well the 22mm is pretty damn meaty... 18mm should be OK imo.

totally happy with my whiteline 18mm sway bar and this is also the first case I've ever heard of this.

given the euro's lighter weight running an 18mm sway bar shouldn't be a problem on the stock suspension, even less of a problem with after market stiffer coilovers.

I'm not sure if the acurazine member in the states had stock suspension or not? If so the sway bar would be copping the full grunt of the body roll without stiffer springs to help it out.

He said he had it for 2.5 years though so he might not have had the reinforced endlinks, yet still had this problem?

it's all very interesting...

edit: just read he has tanabe coilovers looks like the 22mm sway bar and firm polyurethane mounts are a no no

SiReal
22-02-2007, 02:55 PM
im curious as to how they will fix it. does this require welding much like a civic subframe or is the mounting point bolted on so just a case of replcament?

edit: just looked. will require welding...fuddggeeee

Whiteline's 18mm is ok. I have that. No problems other than having to grease the bushings every 6 months.

Sad, the Progress 22mm RSB comes with poly bushes and that looked to be more promising than the Comptech because you could use aftermarket exhausts with it.

bummer, i don't think a 22mm bar is a risk I'm willing to take. It's possible to order one through whiteline for around the same price as the 18mm if you specify the dimension. Maybe a 20mm would be a good compromise?

I've had my bar for about a year now and haven't had to regrease the bushings yet - will it just start making noise when it needs some grease?

JasonGilholme
22-02-2007, 03:06 PM
you'll get a bit of a squeek i think.

Is there anyway you can re-inforce the mounting points for the swaybar?? Maybe with an extra plate sort of like the HD plate that whiteline offer with the 22mm civic/crx bars??

You'll get a loud twang sound when going over bumps or cornering hard.

Therefore, sometimes, thicker isn't always better! (No not referring to your manhood..)

Yeah i noticed this on the AZine site earlier.22mm RSB is obviously too thick.I've got 18mm as well had for 8mths.no problems.

Probably.a good test is over speed humps. If it creaks over them it needs greasing

Tighten the end links - I don't think this is the bushes.

If the endlinks are already tight, then regrease the bushes.

Personally, I've always thought that 22 mm was too stiff a rear sway for a road-driven Euro anyhow.

Obviously it will depend on the type of metal used, but if you actually read Whiteline's information in the front of their PDF catalogue, they say that every mm DOUBLES the stiffness.

That means (in theory) that their 18 mm RSB is 4 times as stiff as the stock one! Imagine how stiff the 22 mm would be! I'm not the least bit surprised to see that it ripped the mount!

You have to have some flex in your suspension for it to do its job properly. Unless you're on a super-smooth race-track, suspension that's too stiff will cause the car to lose grip faster than a softer set-up (which is great if you're drifting, but lousy if you really want to corner fast and keep going!).

SiReal
23-02-2007, 09:19 AM
yeah agreed ^^ i;ve got mega understeering now that the car handles so flat. but its just so much more comfortable around corners.

it really makes u think about getting better tyres.

Going from 14mm to 22mm increases the stiffness by 510%, 5 times.

i think 16-18mm sway bar already enough for daily driven euro.. if u want to track, that's a 22mm best for stiffness..

I don't think anyone here has the 22mm RSB(correct me if i'm wrong).I had the option of going thicker on mine if i wanted to but it was recommended to me to go 18mm.I,m glad i went 18mm.

Just checked the car, my Whiteline polyurethene bushes still looks oil and greasy... except for the usual dirt...

I was having a discussion with Aaron last night about reinforcing the mounting points.. I was thinking I weld a backing plate on the side (Where the stel is the thinnest) to stop the vertical forces breaking the mounts....

I think you'll find that the guys on Acurazine site with this problem both have a 22mm RSB which appears to be placing too much strain on the mounting points.I also don't think it's anything to do with the poly bushes or not greasing them up regularly. The bar IMO is simply too thick to run on the stock Acura TSX/Euro bracket that is attached to the subframe.I'm running an 18mm bar.had it on for 8 mths.15k.

Yeah selby's sold the factory to whitelines, then they bought it back.

So they can reproduce bascially any of the whitelines products.

Ok thanks for the help guys..

If you want a Selby sway bar call 9603 0100 and they are located in Minto as DRU said. I believe the person who's running the show is Gary Cook.

The 18mm non-adjustible bar is ~$220 + delivery. They also have an adjustible one that is 22mm for $250 +GST.

BTW Signature sway bars quoted me $175 + delivery for the 18mm one. They are located in Taren Point and the contact is Todd Selby.

Cheers

Get the Signature bar.apart from being cheaper it'll fit straight up no problems, squeaks etc.If it's painted yellow(mine is)then it's a Selby.I've heard of Whiteline bars not fitting up and having to be forced to fit(not good quality control)

Let me clarify this..i was told by the new owners of the Selby name that it was owned by Whiteline previously until it was sold recently so Whiteline no longer owns the Selby name!

Apparently the original owners of Selby sold the name to Whiteline but decided to use the Selby name and was taken to court of course and hence they are now know as Signature sway bars.

Tony1234 who did you get yours from?

Shit I got quoted $210 plus delivery from Todd Selby today for 18mm..........Minto is not trading atm..........also the stock RSB is 13mm on 5AT, I checked with a thickness gauge, so 18mm RSB would be around 200% stiffer.
