My vtir prelude was involved in a head on collision with a wooden light pole. The damage is pretty bad(radiator, alternator, headlights, windscreen, front spoiler...) and both air bags went off, I am still waiting for full internal assessment. Unfortunately i have no insurance and have been given an external estimated quote of $10 000 to $20 000 to restore it back to original condition. Does this sound about right? And if it is restored to original condition, will it lose much resale value?

10,000 or 20,000 is a big jump
if its 20,000 seirusly i wouldn't bother...preludes aren't worth 20,000 now are they ?

around $15000-$20000 2nd hand I think. But $10k-20k sounds a bit too much for a restoration job.

chassis rails maybe bent.
strut toweres i reckon are bent.
intake
washer bottle.
the raditator and condensor fans
bonnet lock maybe.
show us pics, and we'd be able to tell you roughly, but i reckon it shouldn't realy exceed 10k, if yhour using 2nd hand parts

repairable write off ?
if so.. that'll take a chunk out of your resale value.

organise it with the wooden light pole to say its his fault
give the pole some cash and then let him claim insurance

write off is more of an insurance term, not really applicable here

Take off all your parts, junk the chassis, get another lude for $15-20k. You'll hav ea spare engine and parts as spares or to make a monster h22a.

i dont disagree with the parting strategy, but since he'd only be left with standard parts, that wouldnt make for a 'monster h22a' would it?

lmao hahahaha
yeah sorry to hear man
my mate had a front accident in a xr6 and his repairs came to $14000 and it didnt look major, i guess maybe cause its a later model car parts were hard to find, but he was lucky to find a 2nd hand dash with airbags in contact....
resale value would go down... i suggest buying another car and try sell your wreck for as much as you can get....

dam man that sux :(
check THIS (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57662) out. Doesn't look like much right? To repair using all brand new OEM parts I was quoted $7,200! Might help you make a decision.

what were you qouted?
panels and stuff is usually okay, but the condensor and radiator, would set you back a arm and a leg if it's brand new and genuine.

rails were bent, radiator was $800 alone, each headlight was $280, cant member the condenser but it wasn't cheap, d-series sump was about $350 and radiator fan and shroud about $500+. Thats $2.5k already not to mention air con condenser fan, radiator support, bumper, front reo, grill, badge, headers, panel labor (especially getting the rails straightened!), mechanic labor, paint and paint labor, welding supplies, other bits n pieces that add up like coolant, oil, clips & screws etc.
Then if both your air bags have been deployed thats gonna kill ya!! Luckily for me mine wasn't
etc etc... :(
i ended up getting all but the air con done for about $3k (after having to also get a new battery :( )
and thats why i have my current sig! ;)

Don't forget airbags and sensors. There's a lot of money right there.

i so cannot believe people drive a car valued up to 20k without full comprehensive insurance. what would u do if u ran into this pole at speed, it then fell onto a porsche which blew up launching flames onto a house and it burnt down? say a total cost of 500k, what would u do?honestly? i realise thats all third party stuff but u say u have NO insurance.
sorry dude but that was a very bad mistake. then ur second mistake was driving in a manner that u managed to run into a light pole.
but on a note relavent to this thread, i had a guy back into my car going about 5km/h. front bar and bonnet needed a replace, so obviously sprayed too, to the untrained eye looked like little to no damage, cost of repair =4k
so looking at the list distrukshn posted, which he did not include the two simple items that cost 4k i would not be supprised with 12k+

i think that is right for people who drive rust buckets. Good luck with it - how much would a half cut be? It might just be cheaper to buy another car and sell off the parts in your lude.

I agree $1million percent. If not comprehensive at a minimum you should have third party (at least that covers you up to a few million is something should happen).

Misinformation is part of the problem. Compulsory third party insurance is for INJURY only - not property damage. You need separate private insurance if you want to cover yourself if you drive through a house, damage a Ferrari, etc.

i thought the personal injury was covered by greenslip?

thats exactly what he said, greenslip only covers personal INJURY, not damage to PROPERTY.
say for example you only had your greenslip, and you had an at fault accident with a ferrari, injuring the driver of the other car.
your insurance WILL pay for his medical bills
your insurance WONT pay for:
your mechanic repairs
his mechanic repairs

True...If you can't afford at least 3rd Party Property, you shouldn't be driving at all..Period.

Part the car out and buy a cheap "crapbox" (something decent, LS Integra, EG Civic, etc), then get 3rd party/comprehensive insurance...
Seriously, it isn't worth your time or money trying to fix it - even if you fix it, you won't get back what you've spent fixing it... so you might as well sell what you have already spent money on (i.e. the car).
You'd be surprised how much you can get for parts...
Tail Lights - ~$120
Seats - ~$300
etc etc
Add it all up and you can end up getting quite a lot... without having to spend money on top. Win-Win from a really terrible situation...

part the car out, buy a cheap car until you can afford a decent car with insurance, and learn your lesson.

Its not that i cant afford insurance(im willing to pay 15000 for repairs) just didnt get around to getting it. I have no idea how to take parts out to sell them, and since i got offered only 2500 for salvage then i dont really have any other choice(yes,i have sentimental attachment to my car!).

Taking out parts is as simple as removing all the screws around them until they pull out easily.
Selling them is as easy as posting them here or on PreludeAustralia.com and listing a price. If they don't sell at that price, you'll be offered something near.
While you'll probably not get rid of things like windows, doors and chassis, you'll be able to sell pretty much everything else; mainly because Honda wreckers seem to forget about Preludes.

If you're willing to pay upto 15g's for repairs, you can just take the salvage money and the repair money and get yourself another (uncrashed) prelude. Or you can do what others have said, i.e. take off parts slowly (you'll get more back than 2.5k).

yeah makes no sense... i think with 2.5k for the salvage + the 15k you prob going to spend on repairs.. you can get another lude... some people do have sentimental value with their car but is it really worth it in the end?

I wouldnt bother... most of the cost would be going to putting the airbags back in... plus your car will never handle the same.

Very true. Same type of situation for me. Wasn't thinking and in a rush= speeding-> big crash ----> $16500 bill. That is a hella lot of money to me. 2 years down the track I'm still thinking how could I have been so absent minded. SO I urge people to get comprehensive, yes sometimes expensive depending what you drive but you can't put a price on peace of mind. Very quickly changed the way I drove and put my head in the right direction for once. Very lucky to be alive too.
