Hi Guys,
I have a 1990 honda civic with a d16y1 engine, swapped about 4months ago.
Now it has a knocking sound coming from the engine. Suspect its in the big end. Was a slight knock at 3500rpm at slow aceleration. But now its become a loud knock. Any Ideas?
Thanks

Many things can knock, gearbox, suspension, etc..
Get a mechanic to diagnose the problem and go from there :)

Currently my car has had upgrades.
Was 1990 civic hatch with a D15b4 SOHC Non-Vti Dual carby.
Now:
Swapped to a D16Y1 SOHC VTI (supposedly outta 97 civ 65,000kms)
2" Hi Flow exhaust
Cold air intake
HD Clutch
Autosmart Vtec Controller set at 5500rpm
all done in 3months.
Knocking is said to be coming from the bottom end. Mechanic heard it before when it started. Said it could be Con-rod bearing. But seeing it had just come out of warranty they cant do much. Supplier for motor gone bust. So kinda stuck at the moment.
Knocking has gotten worse about 4 times louder even on idle therefore have stopped driving it. Its like a knocking/rattle as if something has come off. Has it in neutral. Clutch was changed about 2 months ago Gear box is fine, was inspected while clutch being changed.
Oil Levels were fine but might have been left too long without a service.
Points to conrod but has anyone else had this problem?

if the noise gets louder with higher rpm, your bottom end crank bearings are about to shit themselves.
i have had the exact problem. put a slice through my sump and a hole the size of a golf ball through the front of the block
it may not be too late to save, but id see if it has any last words
could be a lack of oil pressure?

Ok Steer,
If thats the case what should i do? and what's the best way to go about it?
Cheers

take it to your workshop asap, probably even tow it there. see how much a bottom end rebuild will cost, and see if any other damage has been done, and weigh that up vs a new/reco'd/2nd motor.
not much else you can do really, but dont just listen to me, definantly get another opinion

Did you go to hannys?

Just replace the entire motor... :p

no havent taken it to hanny's because i don't want to risk driving it there.
Cylinder 4 is the only cylinder that has chewed the bearings twice now...
Also noticed a gouge in the crankcase after taking the engine apart again. Looks like we didnt put case on properly or conrod is lower when it comes down. Not sure at the moment.
Cant change engine as im getting married end of this month so finance is stopping me =[
If you have any ideas what this could be let me know thanks

so the #4 conrod bearing gone again aye? did you check to see if it spun for oil starvation? did you clean the oil hole in the crank? hows oil pressure with the car on idle and revving?

oil hole in crank has been cleaned. I don't have a tool to check oil pressure.
But after seeing the gouge in the crankcase where #4 conrod bolt has been hitting i suspect something has dropped. therefore wearing the bearing unevenly n causing them to spin?

If your rod bolts were tight both times i would guess the rod is bent. The rod could also be back the front from the old owner. Also did you mark the bearing cap and put it back in the right way?
PS-A happy wife is a happy life. (best advice ever lol)
Good luck with your wedding

Yup, rod bolts were tight both times. Bearing cap was placed the right way.
New bearings for rod #3. Still slight knock coming in at 3000rpm.
I think i'm back to square 1..
any more suggestions?
Cheers =]
thanks for that advice creative =]=]

yeh i've changed bearings.
2 days later they were spun again
round #2 now.. but knocking is there from about 2600rpm n up
On Idle i think you can hear the rod wearing the bearing.
Maybe it will go away as it wears them in?
I have no idea at the moment.

Honestly man,
Just leave it alone until you've got the time to fix it properly. Otherwise, you're going to have a huge headache that will last until you finally take the engine out of the car to do the job the way it should be done....
Hope you know what i mean....

if you have changed bearings twice then there is somthing wrong with the sleves in the block

LOL how can the sleve spin bearing:eek: . if your going budget then 1: check your oil pressure at idle. 2: replace the rod and check the piston and pin. 3: measure the crank.
Something has to be bent to hit the crank case tho??? And low oil pressure will spin bearings ( i never re use rods that have spun bearings). any chance of a pic of the bearings and the damage to the crank case.

haven't got pics yet. Crank case hitting was due to crankcase being put on unevenly but that has been fixed.
How do i check oil pressure?
Whats the best way to measure crank.
Cheers again creative

screw an oil pressure gauge into the pressure switch hole.

Yep if you think about it a bearing doesnt spin for no reason, I really dont think it would be worth fixing as its probably missed a few oil changes my guess. just find another d16y1 as they dont fetch that much cash, cut your losses and try get a couple of hundred for your current engine.

Okay finally got some cash to play with.
Who's selling a D16Y1 engine?
