You can try the powered subwoofer..... havent acctually heard of one of the newer models, but I can assume there are no where as nice a real subbie, but it does the job, compact, and easy installation.

If you're after a cheaper alternative (Alpine one cost from 799!) then Blaupunkt have a couple options for powered subs. Infinity have a range out sub with built in amp as well.

Blaupunkt:

There's also another Blau powered sub but it doesnt seem to be listed on the site, it retails for $299 but it's only a 6.5" sub so it's probably just for in-cabin duties.

Infinity (expensive):

I think JVC also has a self-powered sub but i can't find it on their site.

hey there i do audio day in day out and hear it all forget active subs/powered subs they are average if i was you and i had a hatch/coupe(dont know if you do sorry) i would put a JL bass tube with a plug and make some straps to secure. the sub only needs like 60w ( thereabouts) and they thump for what they are. read up on them i have fitted heaps and no complaints to date. i would get one to if i had limited space. PM for any questions....

How about something like the QMax Invisabass?
Clarion SRV313 (http://clarion.com/au/en/products/2006/audio/subwoofers/SRV313/au-en-product-pf_1139306870660.html)
RRP 399 so you should be able to get for under $350. Nice and small and you can fit anywhere.

Also the Qmax Invisabass looks to be quite easy to conceal.
